Homebrew Mothfolk Species Details
Mothfolk are a mysterious, reclusive race found in the lost
reaches of the world, seldom seen in more "civilized" places.
Tall and often silent, Mothfolk have a reputation for being
cryptic and thoughtful - although in reality many of them stay outwardly
silent because they know the thrumming, clicking sound of
their communication makes the more "normally-speaking"
races uncomfortable.
To accommodate for this, Mothkin have evolved a form of one-way telepathy - allowing them to speak
in any language they can speak outwardly, directly to their intended recipient(s).
This way of speaking is heard by those it's intended for in a dialect most familiar by them,
so long as they understand the base language being spoken to them.
The appearance of a Mothkin is also not something that
most are accustomed to. Their large, heavy wings hang
around their tall humanoid bodies like cloaks, and their
inhuman faces with antennae and compound eyes may prove
off-putting to those with strong aversions to all things insectoid.
Sometimes covered in fur, these multi-armed creatures are the subjects of many
countryside myths and legends about giant bugs that stalk the night,
preying on children - although these myths vary wildly in
truthfulness.
Many pursue intellectual or mindful pursuits, becoming librarians or
philosophers, pontificating on the nature of life and
knowledge itself.
Still others decide to live their relatively brief lives
adventuring, seeing the world, becoming as well-traveled and
renowned as they can before passing their fortunes on to
their children. A common thread throughout most Mothfolk,
though, is that they are slow to anger. It is instilled in most
Mothfolk as early as the larval stage, regardless of culture,
that life is too short to be spent angry.
Mothfolk Traits
Mothfolk Racial TraitsAbility Score Increase
You can increase any ability score by 2 and any other score by 1.
Moth Wings
Because of your wings, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. You are unable to fly while wearing heavy armor, but can benefit from half flying speed while wearing medium armor.
Darkvision
Thanks to your Insectoid and Fey heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60ft of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Perceptive Antennae
You have proficiency in the Wisdom (Perception) skill.
Extra Arms
You have one or two extra set(s) of weaker arms (your choice) below your regular arms. These additional arms cannot support holding weapons or shields, but can pick up and interact with light objects and materials that aren't heavy outside of combat. During intense situations, these arms are tucked to the body for extra protection, and are therefore unusable during combat.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write in Common and Sylvan.
One-Way Telepathy
The Mothkin can speak Telepathically to anyone they choose so long as they can see or hear their target, though the target cannot speak back telepathically unless they have way to do so already. The target must know the language being spoken to understand it.
Feyborn
You are considered a Fey.
Mothfolk Dust
As an action, you can spread the dust from your wings and choose a number of creatures up to your proficiency bonus. Upon entering or starting their turn in the cloud, they gain THP equal to one roll of the caster's Hit Die plus the caster's Constitution modifier. The chosen creatures can only benefit from this ability once until you use the ability again. While you retain these temporary hit points, creatures cannot have advantage on attack rolls against you as a result of being unseen. You may use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus.
