Homebrew Yoshi (SMW) Species Details
Until recently, Yoshis lived in seclusion deep within thick jungles. They are omnivores, but they tend to feast upon fruits over the meat of other animals. They travel in packs, and they uphold a respect for the natural world. Yet, as the wars around them grew, they found that they had to finally stop hiding and choose to defend themselves. They still prefer the isolation of the deep jungles, but they will sacrifice their comfort in the name of survival.
They visually are quite similar to a tyrannosaurus rex: reptilian skin, long neck, large mouth, stout legs, thick tail, and two small forearms. Their unique back strength allows them to carry others, but that doesn’t mean they are inclined to let others ride them.
(For the purposes of simplicity, the yoshis speak draconic as their natural language.)
Yoshi (SMW) Traits
As a yoshi, you have these special traits.Holding Breath
You can hold your breath up to 15 minutes.
Geko Bite
You have a fanged maw that you can use to make unarmed strikes. If the target is a Small Creature, your reach extends to 10ft, as your geko tongue pulls them into your mouth. When you hit with it, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Hungry Jaws
You can throw yourself into a feeding frenzy. As a bonus action, you can make a special attack with your Bite. If the attack hits, it deals its normal damage, and you gain temporary hit points equal to your proficiency bonus. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Saddleback
Because of the way your back is curved plus the strength of your legs, you can carry a creature of Medium Size or smaller on your back without any speed penalty. If the target has any unique abilities related to mounts, they can apply them while riding your back. You, the yoshi, are considered to be an independent mount.
((An independent mount — one that lets you ride but ignores your control — retains its place in the Initiative order and moves and acts as it likes.))
