Homebrew Aqualis Serpentis (Electric Eel merfolk) Species Details

Aqualis Serpentis (Electric Eel merfolk) Traits

With their dazzling appearance, unmatched intelligence, and powerful electric abilities, the Aqualis Serpentis are a compelling choice for any campaign, combining mystique, strength, and grace in a unique race that can command both land and sea.

Electromagnetic Pulse

Your body generates electric pulses that you can release with a touch or as a wave of energy. As an action, you can unleash a burst of electricity in a 15-foot radius. All creatures within the area must make a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier) or take 1d8 lightning damage and be stunned until the end of your next turn. On a successful save, they take half as much damage and are not stunned. Once you use this ability, you must complete a short or long rest before using it again.

Shimmering Bioluminescence

Your opalescent skin glows with an inner light, and your translucent tail pulses with electric currents. You can use your bioluminescence to create mesmerizing patterns, giving you advantage on Charisma (Performance) checks related to singing, dancing, or other artistic displays. You also can cast Dancing Lights at will without expending a spell slot, and the lights glow in harmony with the current of electricity running through your body.

Opalescent Beauty:

Your beauty is as captivating as it is dangerous. You can use your Charisma score for any skill check related to persuasion, deception, or intimidation when dealing with creatures who can perceive your beauty. You have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks to influence other creatures.

Electric Aura (Flaw)

While you possess tremendous power, it comes at a cost. Your electric abilities, while useful, can also be a weakness. Whenever you are hit by a melee attack, there is a 10% chance (roll of 1 on a d10) that your electricity discharges uncontrollably, dealing 1d4 lightning damage to both you and the attacker. This charge can be triggered only once per turn.

Curious Naivety (Flaw)

Aqualis Serpentis, while highly intelligent, often lack worldly experience beyond the depths of the sea. Their advanced technology and isolation have given them an untested and somewhat naïve worldview, leaving them vulnerable to manipulation or misunderstanding when dealing with races or cultures outside of Atlantis. They are often eager to learn but lack social tact, and as a result, they have disadvantage on Charisma (Insight) checks made to understand or predict others' motives or intentions.
