Homebrew Arcsoul Fenixkin Species Details

The Fenixkin are a mystical and rare race of beings imbued with the essence of the legendary Phoenix. These radiant individuals are known for their fiery disposition and their miraculous ability to be reborn from their ashes. Born from a blend of humanoid and Phoenix ancestry, they carry the legacy of the ancient, immortal birds within their very souls. This unique heritage grants them extraordinary powers and a profound connection to the cycle of life and death.

The Arcsoul Fenixkin draws its heritage from the stormy Arclight Phoenix. The Arcsoul Fenixkin see themselves as living embodiments of the storm—chaotic yet purposeful, transient yet eternal. They believe in the natural balance of life, death, and rebirth, viewing their work with the dead as essential to ensuring the cycle remains unbroken. Justice for the living and respect for the dead are their guiding principles. They embrace transience, believing that constant motion mirrors the ever-changing skies. Their ships are seen as extensions of themselves, vessels for carrying the will of the storm to distant lands. While they may be gruff and straightforward in speech, their actions show compassion and wisdom. They value deeds over words and are slow to judge but quick to act when justice is required.

Though they are a wayfaring folk the Arcsouls are not pirates they uphold the rule of justice that many of their species uphold and travel to distant shores to assist with funerary rites and rituals as needed by the small folk of the realms. Just as storms bring both destruction and renewal, the arrival of the Arcsouls often signals transformation—whether through aiding the living or ushering the dead to their rest.  Their role as shepherds to the lost and wearied dead makes them highly respected, even revered, among common folk. The sight of their lightning-marked sails is seen as a blessing in troubled times. Their adherence to justice and rejection of piracy set them apart from other wayfaring peoples. They act as protectors of the seas, often intervening against raiders or marauders.

Community and Home

The Arcsouls live aboard vast fleets of ships called Tempestflotillas, each consisting of multiple families or clans. These flotillas function as tight-knit communities, where roles are divided based on skill and need. Each flotilla is led by a Skywarden, chosen for their wisdom, strength, and ability to navigate both stormy seas and difficult moral waters. Stormseers are spiritual leaders who interpret omens in the weather and guide the community in their funerary and religious practices. Wavehands are skilled sailors, warriors, and navigators who ensure the survival of the flotilla, embodying the practical and protective side of Arcsoul culture. The Arcsouls are inclusive, often adopting orphans or lost souls into their ranks, offering them a new "family" among the Tempestflotilla. Those who join undergo a rite of passage, symbolically "baptized" by lightning during a controlled storm ritual.

Religion and Beliefs

While religious, the Arcsouls keep their deeper spiritual practices private, often held aboard their ships in sacred spaces called Thunderholds, small sanctuaries carved into the heart of their vessels. The storm is both destroyer and creator—lightning burns but also sparks new life. The Arcsouls’ rituals reflect this duality, emphasizing that death is not an end but a necessary phase in a greater cycle. Funerals are central to Arcsoul culture and are seen as a celebration of the life lived and a shepherding of the soul to its next stage. Common rituals include:

  1. Burial by Water:

    • The deceased is placed on a raft and set adrift, accompanied by a ceremonial lightning strike that ignites the vessel or charges it with energy. This act symbolizes the storm guiding the soul to its next journey.
  2. Funeral Pyres:

    • On land, pyres are ignited by lightning conjured by the Stormseers. The rising smoke is said to carry the spirit upward to the embrace of the Arclight Phoenix.
  3. Burial Cairns:

    • For those who wish to remain physically tethered to the land, the Arcsouls construct humble cairns. These are often topped with storm-charged stones that glow faintly, warding off evil and symbolizing the enduring spark of life.
  4. The Wake of Stories:

    • Funerals are not somber occasions but vibrant gatherings filled with songs and tales. It is believed that recounting the life of the deceased empowers their soul in the afterlife.

Around the worlds of the multiverse, the Arcsouls are shepherds to the wearied and lost dead and the sight of their sails is welcomed by the small folk. When arriving in a new village, the Arcsouls begin with The Calling of the Storm, a grand display of their magic. Lightning dances across their ships’ masts, and they sing hauntingly beautiful shanties that echo across the shore. This marks the start of a week-long festival called the Tempest Revel, filled with shared feasts, dances, and storytelling. Villagers or members of the flotilla may undergo this rite to seek courage or renewal. The participant is bathed in rainwater, and a controlled lightning strike is called down to charge them with the Arclight Phoenix’s energy.

Art and Music

Arcsoul art is kinetic and elemental, incorporating storm themes. Their sails are often painted with lightning motifs, and their carvings depict tempestuous seas and skies. Their music is bold and rhythmic, often accompanied by drums, string instruments that crackle with magical energy, and choral chants that mimic the rise and fall of thunder. Tales of their travels, battles, and encounters with the supernatural are central to their culture. These stories often blend fact with myth, preserving the memory of their deeds while inspiring future generations.

Appearance

An Arcsoul's skin has a faint luminescence, resembling the glow of lightning behind storm clouds, and may shimmer subtly in shades of silver, blue, or pale violet. Intricate markings resembling forked lightning or feather patterns crisscross their skin, glowing brighter during moments of intense emotion, heightened power, or storms. Scars or injuries often heal as glowing streaks, adding to their natural lightning-like patterns. Their eyes are mesmerizing and intense, crackling with energy. Common hues include electric blue, golden amber, or bright white. When angry or empowered, their irises spark with visible currents, and arcs of electricity may dance around their pupils. Their hair resembles storm clouds or streaks of lightning, shifting in color depending on mood or environment. Common colors include: White-silver like a flash of lightning. Deep indigo or stormy gray, often threaded with glowing strands of electric blue or gold. Their hair may occasionally crackle with static or shimmer as though illuminated from within.

Arcsoul clothing is designed to evoke the image of storms and skies, often woven with silvery or metallic threads that catch the light like storm clouds under sunlight. They favor garments with flowing elements, like capes or long sashes, that mimic wind currents when they move. Accessories include glowing crystals or gemstones charged with electric energy, worn as amulets or embedded in armor.

Arcsouls give their young short to medium-length names with a sharp or flowing sound, evoking lightning's sudden strike or the rolling cadence of thunder.
