Homebrew Cyclops Species Details
That eye . . . that incredible eye. They seem so feral in their appearance, but that eye speaks of an ancient wisdom that cannot be grasped.
- Cardinal Epson Millhoff, in his book "Obscure Peoples"
There exists a wide variety of contradictory legends surrounding the origins of the cyclopes, many of them not having originated from the cyclopes themselves. They themselves generally have little interest in how their people came to be, though many of them will claim they descend from the line of Godson Annam All-Father. This, of course, cannot be true, for a god that created the goliath and the dwarf certainly could not be the source of these brutes.
- Mercon Ellobie, intermediate scribe, Temple of the Whispering Tiger, Of the Iron Way
The Cyclops are an enigma, a picture of contrast and a perfect example of a comparative analysis of dissimilar qualities existing in the same creature.
- Ellion Appletree, Arcanum biology professor
The mist filled history of the cyclops may very well lie in mystery, never to be uncovered for all to see. The cyclops certainly don't care about their own history, and seem to take offense at anyone else prying into their lives to try and figure it out. So, we will instead focus on the things we do know about this race of half-giants who can be rather brutish and sage-like at the same time.
Society - The cyclops are a race of savages and nomads who wander the land in search of something unnamed. They live in small camps that are mobile and easily taken down and rebuilt. They may plant small gardens, which they abandon and pick at when they next pass that way. They keep herds of goats and cattle, live simple lives, and prefer to keep to themselves. They elect their chieftains, who are usually male, but seldom seem to follow this one as a leader of any kind. They instead hold their shaman, the holy person of their small tribe, in highest regard. From all accounts, the chief is selected on they one who will lead them across the earth when they travel. There is no other distinction with the position.
Foresight - The cyclops have some ability in predicting events in the near future. They would have you believe they sacrificed one of their eyes to receive this "second sight". As there seems to be no other explanation for their only possessing one eye, this has become the accepted explanation among scholars and bards. It cannot be disputed their ability to see into the future, though this more often is centered upon their own future and not the future of someone making enquiries about themselves.
Skills - The cyclops, in general, are very gifted in crafts, creating incredible works of art out of mostly natural components. They are also very accomplished smiths, leather workers, and weavers.
Age - Cyclopes reach adulthood around the age of 15 and can live for five or more centuries.
