Homebrew Akkian Species Details

The Akkian people reside deep within the Feywilds, far away from both the Seelie and Unseelie courts. They make their home in a dense, forested area that centralizes around an ominous hole that scars the earth. The Akkians take up the duty of guarding this hole, not to keep things from going in, but to keep things out, for this peculiar hole is a fissure between reality that conjoins the Feywilds with the Shadowfell. As such, many Akkians are soldiers and warriors or medics who keep the peace within their home. Fortunately, not many threats ever arise from the gateway and the ones that do are quickly terminated. Even so, tragedy sometimes strikes and some are killed or kidnapped and dragged into the Shadowfell, often never to be seen again. For this reason, groups of scouts are formed to explore and settle the parts of the Shadowfell close to the rift in order to nullify threats before they get through and to potentially rescue kidnapped individuals.

The Akkians themselves have a lean build, allowing them to be light and quick on their feet. Wings are commonplace for these people in that some are born with them and others learn to create them through magical means. Those born with wings often learn how to hide them for convenience getting through tighter spaces. They are mammals and are completely covered with fur that can be just about any color, thanks to the Feywilds. Akkians have horns on the sides of their heads that protects the sensitive furs within their large ears, which allows them to have a keen sense of hearing. As a trade off, however, their sense of smell is not very good. They have a long tail that splits into two and legs that are akin to that which you would see on wild animals in the material plane.

Akkian culture is vibrant and colorful, and music is an integral part of their society. They have a strong sense of loyalty and family, and they are willing to die to protect the ones they love. They are also endlessly curious, often conducting experiments in order to gain more knowledge. For this reason, many Akkians can be seen exploring any and all planes they can travel to, living in the various biomes and ecosystems to get a better understanding of their surroundings. Special explorers, like the aforementioned scouts, travel to the Shadowfell to research any way to either close the rift or find an efficient weapon against the monsters that reside within it. Of course, every explorer equips themselves with magical countermeasures to the negative psychological effect of the Shadowrealm.

Akkians mature at about the same rate as any other race. After an Akkian reaches maturity, they age very slowly, and the average life expectancy of your average Akkian is approximately a millennia. Some special individuals have stopped aging entirely, essentially making them immortal. The oldest known living Akkian is over 7000 years old, but still has the fitness he did back in his early 20s. Even today he dutifully guards the rift to the Shadowfell. If one day you decide you want to meet him, his name is Gered.

Akkian Traits

You have the following racial traits

Darkvision

It’s darkvision. You should know what that is.

Ability score increase.

The Akkians are a diverse race, which allows them to have many differing talents. You choose the scores you increase (ex. 1, 1, 1 or 2, 1)

Language

As an Akkian you can speak common, silvan, shadowvar and one other.

Flight

Cannot be used when wearing medium or heavy armor.

Because of the wings Akkians have, their flying speed is equal to their walking speed. Unfortunately, for flight to be achieved one must have hollow bones. As such, Akkians are incredibly light for their size, and broken bones are all too common. Whenever you are hit when flying, you lose your balance and begin to plummet. You must make a DEX save of half of the damage dealt to you (at least 10). On a success, you stay in the air. On a failure you fall 30ft or until you hit the ground. Take 1d6 damage for every 10ft you fall, and you are considered prone.

Astral Weapons

Since Akkians are naturally gifted in magic, it is no wonder that they figured out a way to summon weapons of their own. In order to summon a weapon, one must first master that specific weapon, and understand its basic structure. Only then can one summon that weapon.

At level 3, you can choose a simple or martial weapon that you are proficient with and learn to congeal your innate magic together to instantaneously create that weapon. The number of different weapons you can summon increases to 2 at 7th level, and again to 3 at 13th level (i.e. at third level you may be able to summon a long sword and ONLY a long sword). Only one weapon can be summoned at a time.

Your astral weapons become magical for the purpose of overcoming resistances at level 5.
