Your Dexterity score increases by 2, reflecting the natural speed and reflexes gained from your animal form, whether it's a wolf’s quick footwork, a cat’s nimbleness, or a hawk’s swift flight. Your Wisdom score increases by 1, representing the sharpened senses and survival instincts that come with your connection to the animal world, giving you an intuitive understanding of nature, enhanced perception, and a strong sense of self-preservation.

• Dexterity +2: Your enhanced agility helps with tasks that require speed and finesse. This increase improves your armor class (AC), initiative, and Dexterity-based skills (such as Acrobatics and Stealth), allowing you to excel in fast-paced combat and evasive maneuvers.

• Wisdom +1: Your heightened awareness improves your ability to perceive the world around you and makes you more in tune with your surroundings. This increase boosts your Wisdom saving throws, Perception, Survival, and Insight checks, making you better at sensing danger, reading people’s emotions, and navigating through wilderness or complex situations.

Animal Shifters mature quickly, reaching adulthood by their late teens, typically around 18 to 20 years of age. Their lifespans vary significantly based on their animal heritage and the harsh environments they often inhabit. While most Shifters live to around 70 years, some live shorter, more intense lives if they are aligned with animals known for shorter lifespans (such as small mammals). However, those with connections to long-lived or resilient animals (like turtles or large birds of prey) can live much longer, occasionally reaching 90 to 100 years.

Shifters experience aging in two distinct phases:

1. Human Phase (Adolescence): During their younger years, Shifters grow and mature much like humans. Their connection to their animal side is present but less dominant, manifesting more in instincts and slight physical features (e.g., sharp eyes, quick reflexes).

2. Shifted Phase (Adulthood to Elderhood): As they reach adulthood and become more in tune with their animalistic nature, they can shift more easily and frequently. In this phase, their physical aging slows down, particularly while in animal form, making them appear younger and healthier than other humanoids of the same age. This connection to the primal essence of nature gives them a vitality and endurance beyond most creatures, which allows some Shifters to remain fit and strong well into their later years.

The later years of a Shifter's life often see them transitioning to a more primal state, becoming more attuned to their instincts and animal side, sometimes leading to a nomadic lifestyle or a return to the wilderness where they feel most at home.

While shifted, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks related to your animal form (such as smell for a wolf, sight for a hawk, etc.). The shift lasts for 1 minute or until you revert to your normal form as a bonus action. Once you shift, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.

• Reaction: When you take damage from an attack, trap, or environmental hazard, you can use your reaction to tap into your primal instincts and temporarily gain resistance to the damage type that triggered the reaction (such as bludgeoning, fire, or poison).
• Duration: This resistance lasts until the end of your next turn, providing a window of heightened defense where you can either escape or retaliate.
• Uses: You can use this trait once per long rest, as it requires a burst of intense focus and reflexive energy that cannot be sustained frequently without rest.
• Damage Types: Instinctive Reflexes can provide resistance to the following damage types: bludgeoning, piercing, slashing, fire, cold, lightning, thunder, acid, or poison. This reflects the diverse ways that animal instincts can protect you, whether it’s dodging a blow, toughening against burns, or resisting toxins.

You have proficiency in the Perception skill, allowing you to detect hidden threats, notice subtle changes in your environment, or spot distant details more easily than other creatures.

Additionally, you can choose one sense to enhance from the following list, which grants you advantage on Perception checks related to that sense:

• Keen Hearing: Your ears are highly sensitive, capable of picking up sounds that others would miss. Whether it's the soft tread of an approaching enemy or the faint rustle of leaves in the distance, you can hear the subtlest noises. This sense is useful in environments where visibility is limited but sound is abundant, such as forests, caves, or bustling cities.
• Keen Sight: Your eyes are exceptionally sharp, able to spot minute details or distant objects that others might overlook. This sense is ideal in environments with good visibility, such as open plains, mountainous regions, or high vantage points.
• Keen Smell: Your sense of smell rivals that of a predator, able to detect subtle scents in the air that others would miss. This is particularly useful in environments where visibility is poor, like dark caves, underground tunnels, or dense jungles.

• Communication with Beasts:
  You have the ability to communicate simple ideas with non-hostile beasts through natural gestures, sounds, and body language. This isn’t a spoken language, but rather an instinctual exchange that allows you to convey basic emotions, needs, or requests such as calm, trust, fear, or aggression. The beast can understand your intentions but may still act according to its own instincts and nature.

• Animal Handling Proficiency:
  You gain advantage on Animal Handling checks when interacting with creatures that share traits with your shifted form. For example:

  • A wolf shifter gains advantage when interacting with wolves, dogs, or other canines.
  • A hawk shifter gains advantage with birds of prey or other avian creatures.
  • A bear shifter would have a natural affinity with bears, large mammals, or creatures that rely on strength and intimidation.
