Homebrew Ancient Angel Species Details

“We had the town under siege for two months, draining their resources. When we finally breached the walls, one of the first places we started looting was the cathedral. That was our last mistake. The moment the first soldier approached the altar, its silverware left bare and ready for the taking… we all heard a great horn blow. That’s when we knew it was too late. An entire flight, over five hundred angels, had arrived. We were slaughtered en mass and failed to take even a single one of them down. They left a single survivor to warn the world. So, the next time you’re in a church with winged humans depicted on stain glass, think twice about doing anything… wrong. They’ll know, and if you cross the line, you will die by their spears.” Maveith Scouragesurvivor, Last of  the Thenalelo Clan

Born of Gods

Angels find themselves servants of gods by nature, created to be the directest imposition of their will on mortals. Because of this, angels vary greatly in their exact origin, each god who employs them taking their own spin on them. Although there is one thing certain about angels, whenever they appear, they represent a great interest from their deity, and dismissing that off-handily is a dire mistake.

The Dreams of Mortals

While standing, Angels are taller than the mortal races they share features with, prototypically humans although not always. They average at nearly seven feet tall, the largest approaching nine. Although, their height is far from the most imposing thing about them. Their feathered wings used to achieve flight are massive, far too large to use effectively in most buildings. When an Angel has room to fly, however, they are far swifter than any mortal race. While most Angels’ wings are white, other colors are now to exist. Most interestingly, Angels are able to fold their wings to an impressive degree, making them effectively a cloak, allowing passage otherwise tight areas.

Bred for Military

Angels are born to be the servants of gods, and this commonly causes angels as a whole to become an army of sorts. Although not all Angels are truly warriors, all of them have some degree of combat ability, magic or otherwise. This also means they are raised in an environment of major hierarchy, and whether they accept or reject it, they understand it.

Angel Traits

Your angel character has the following racial traits.

Ancient Angel Traits

"May the sky bloom with light"

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by 2. Your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age

The age of angels varies greatly, in part by their patron god, in a greater degree to their own status. Angels of lower power live for only 300 years, maturing at around 20 years of age. Angels of a higher power can live for over forty thousand years, maturing at only a couple hundred.

Alignment

Angels are frequently born into massive hierarchies and militaries. Because of this, Angels are rarely chaotic, instead, obeying the commands of their superiors and masters. Angels have an inbred desire to do good, but this sense can be overcome or twisted, meaning Angels of both good and evil exist in equal measure.

Size

Angels possess the ability to tuck in their wings a surprising amount given their massive wingspan. Because of this, when not using their wings, Angels are Small or Medium, and can nearly pass as simply tall humans or other races. However, while their wings are in use, they are instead Large.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 25 feet, while your flying speed is 60.

Flying

Angels have a flying speed of 60 feet while wearing light armor, but due to their large wingspans, they require at least a 10 foot cube to fly. Willing creatures the user can carry without a contested grapple check at half speed. Unwilling creatures must succeed a grapple check. While carrying someone they cannot be more than the size Large.

While wearing heavy armor one cannot fly
