Homebrew Dotosu Species Details
In the entirety of my life, in which I have spent fixing that which has been broken “I have never seen such a pitiful and vulnerable looking creature,” I thought to myself as I laid my eyes on it. The day was at an end the slavers killed the horrors ended, but the pity I felt for this creature remained. It’s sunken eyes starring back at me with fear and horror as if I could only be here for one reason.
The room was small and dark even with the torch I could barely see as if light wasn’t welcome, there barely being enough room for this poor creature to fit despite it being alone and small. All the while I’m examining the room and the creature, it’s still staring in anticipation. Eventually and to great surprise of mine, it spoke. In a small and dreary voice it simply said “h-how long. How long before this, returns here”. This place is dark, depressing and the mere sight makes me never want to see it again, but this pitiful little thing couldn’t wait to return, as if existing would be nothing but pain. Leaving me to wonder what awful things it was expecting me to put it through, if this tiny black box of misery was it’s sanctuary.
A Taste of Freedom
Eventually other sadistic creatures heard of these perfect victims and decided to get their own, this attack on the dotosus’ creators, made an opening for the now dotosu to escape. Very few did and most were killed, others recaptured and some thought best to stay with their masters. All though even the ones that did escape found they still weren’t free, as they are the masters most prized toys. And even now they hide in the hopes they can be truly free.
Rare for a Reason
They are some extremely rare races in the world and dotosu a one of if not the rarest. One reason is because they are a relatively new species only recently becoming their own race, meaning their few in numbers. The main reason is most of them are in hiding to avoid being fond by their cruel creators or other sadists, since they are the perfect lab rat. Usually the only people that know of their existence, other than said creators and the Dotosu them selves, are the cruelest and darkest slavers.
Scarred and Small
Dotosus dark gray and black pigmentation, small foreheads, reseeded jaws, small teeth, and lanky almost skeletal builds make their harsh history plain to those who spot them. Dotosu stand between 5 and 6 feet tall and usually weigh between 35 and 65 pounds.
To dotosu scars are very common and usually hard to cover, as in tended by those who made said scar. Most scars, are the marks slavers as a form of displaying ownership. In other cases there injuries suffered from hunters. It is very rare to ever see a dotosu and even rarer to see one without scars, they serve as unwanted reminders of their past hardships and injuries.
Dotosu Names
Dotosu having forgotten the names of their people before being imprisoned their names are usually derivatives of serial numbers or insults which the dotosu mistook as names, these names would be in their masters tongue. Sometimes, dotosu that didn’t grow up in captivity, have names taken from the culture in which they observed while growing up in hiding.
Serial Number Dotosu names: Trisa, Dowa, Queda, Roku, Vem, Tri,
Dotosu Insult Names: Quis, Verm, Sec, Kaqu
Most if not all dotosu grow up in hiding. This is to avoid being hunted down, sold for being extremely rare, tortured, experimented on, or to be imprisoned again after escaping. This is also true for the other half of the dotosu race, as they never escaped their so called creators and would try to avoid the attention or risk more torture.
Dotosu Traits
Your dotosu character has certain traits deriving from your ancestors adapting to the, cruel as well as dangerous, experimentation and torture they had to go through for generations.Ability Score Increase
Your Constitution score increases by 3.
Age
Dotosu mature at a much slower rate than humans do, and are considered fertile by the age of 250. They can live from 500 to almost 1000 years. Though most get killed at 300.
Alignment
Dotosu might have an innate tendency toward neutrel, due to there evasive nature and instincts to not draw attention. There experiences determine whether or not their truely neutrel.
Size
Dotosu are somewhat taller and far lankier than humans, and they range from 5 to 6 feet tall. Your size is Small.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
Mostly due to generations of being kept in dark places, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Developed Ancestry
When you reach 5th level, you can cast the alter self spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for this spell.
Instinctual Fear
Over generations of being used for entertainment you and your kin have grown naturally shy and complacent, making them quite stealthy despite their appearance. Meaning you have proficiency in the Stealth skill.
Minimalist Genes
You recover quickly meaning, you can make a Constitution saving throw at the end of a short rest to remove 1 point of exhaustion on a success, the DC is equal to 10 + the number of exhaustion points you currently have. You’re also adapted to little sleep or nutrients, only requiring 4 hours of sleep to complete a long rest, and only needing half as much food or water as you normally would.
Regenerative Ability
At the start of each of your turns, as long as you have at least 1 hit point, you regain 1d6 +[{{modifier:con}}] hit points. The hit points regained increases to 2d6 +[{{modifier:con}}] at 6th level, 3d6 +[{{modifier:con}}] at 11th level, and 4d6 +[{{modifier:con}}] at 16th level. Whenever you use this feature to heal yourself equal to your maximum hit points, you gain a point of exhaustion for each instance of this. For example if you’re maximum hit points were 25, and this feature had regained you 50 hit points before you had finished a long rest you would gain two points of exhaustion. Dotosu can also regrow entire bones, the amount of time required to do so is depending on the bone. For instance a tooth would have grown back after one long rest, an entire leg would take a month downtime (resting and doing nothing active) a digit would take two days to a week of downtime depending on the digit. This process can be sped up by using this feature alone to regain a percentage of your maximum hit points, usually over a 100% if it takes longer than a week (DM discretion) depending on the appendage that is being regrown, before taking a long rest. So basically if you get tortured enough in one you might regrow an entire limb in one day.
Sprint of the Desperate
While not holding any items larger than tiny, your walking speed increases by 10 feet.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common.

Posted Jul 22, 2019I would appreciate any advice in terms of balance. As it is extremely difficult to make a regenerative ability both effective and balanced.
