Homebrew Barung Species Details
Often called the toadfolk, the Barung are the distant cousins of the Grung who dwell in temperate to cold forests, marshes, plains, and urban environments. Like the Grung, the Barung possess a cutthroat society based on castes, but, unlike the Grung, castes are not denoted by the color of their skin. Instead, Barung make their niche through their ability and their ruthlessness.
Rather than the militant efforts of the Grung, the Barung instead prefer to utilize their prowess with commerce and trade to spread their influence and the species has developed several merchant clans over the millennia to that end, cementing themselves as in the trade networks of several powers. The Barung also have a not-entirely-undeserved reputation for being involved in criminal activity and many crime bosses have been born from their ranks.
The Barung stand 4’ - 5” tall, being much taller than the Grung and are far more stout, weighing between 130-150 pounds. Their lumpy skin is often dull in coloration ranging from mottled greens, greys, tans, and brown, often even a combination of the colors presented. A few have brighter patterns to break up the dull patterns in yellow, red, or blue, but their skin is always predominantly dull and earthy in tone. Their eyes tend to be black or amber, but some have red, green, vivid gold, or even blue eyes.
Age: Barung mature much quicker than humans, reaching adult size in only two short years, though most remain with their parents and clan for two decades or so before ultimately choosing to leave on their own. However, despite their rapid rate of maturity, Barung are quite long lived due to their natural hardiness and can live to be 300 years old.
