Homebrew Darmuntrix - Human/Dragon Hybrids Species Details

"damn sils, they are just as bad as the dragons, anything with the blood of a dragon can never be helpful!" a small stubby man in thick scarred armor bellowed.

"even if that's what you think, they are good at their job and that's what we need right now." a taller pointed eared woman in fancy purple robes argued.

"enough! like it or not if we want to get to that treasure, we need her help."  a elder man in leather armor and fur said.

as the group was talking from the skies landed a woman in armor, large wings on her back, her body covered in human skin and dragon scales, she took out her blade to get ready for her next job.

"Is everyone ready?"  the woman chirped, a hint of glee in her voice, "I smell gold this way, another day another reward!" she proclaimed as she flew into the large cavern entrance.

"I swear if she gets me killed I will haunt whoever is still alive!"  the short man yelled while wielding up a large axe.

the older man just let out a sign and said. "ahh to be young again, well you heard the lady, lets go!"

Born of the union between a dragon in human form and a human. The Darmuntrix (a human/dragon hybrid) walks through a world that either accepts them despite their dragon blood, shuns them, thinking they are just as monstrous as the beast they were born from, or confuses them as dragonborn. While the "idea" of the Darmuntrixen has existed longer than their name, it is only recently that the name was made from a continent full of humans and dragons alike. More of these human/dragon hybrids took on the name across the known world. The name itself is a fusion of Common and Draconic languages, meaning "human-dragon kind." Their kind benefits greatly from the mix of human ingenuity and the powers of the dragon.

Dragon-like in Appearance

Both humanoid and dragon-like in appearance, the Darmuntrixen have a wide range of looks in terms of normal features like skin and hair color. However, they are known to have pointed ears as well, but the base is always "human-like with dragon features." Some have horns, some even have wings, or some have neither. It depends on the ancestry of the dragon. Some Darmun people even have small amounts of scales covering their bodies, while others are covered head to toe in scales, leaving little human skin visible. Despite this, a darmun's scales shed like any other reptilian once a year, in which the scaly areas are soft and sensitive for the day of the shedding. The color of the scales depends on the dragon parent. With the use of a "breath sack," they are capable of breathing out an elemental breath weapon, which also depends on the ancestry of the Darmun. Their stomachs, much like those of a dragon, can easily handle eating things unfit for most, including something strange within their saliva, allowing them to have the ability to easily consume metals and gems, much like their draconic kind. Each of which is given a certain "taste" to them. Their stomachs are known to be so resilient that even rotten food doesn't bother them much (although some Darmuntrix can be picky eaters). They are capable of consuming two to three times the normal amount a human could eat, but in return, they can go longer without food.

Challenging Upbringing

A Darmuntrixen gets their power from their dragon parent and their "humanity" from their human parent. At the same time, they are also vulnerable in the early stages of their long lives. Those who are lucky are raised with the same care as any child. However, there are children that were born from humans unaware of their spouses true form. Some try to live with the future that may be, while others have abandoned the child to either be cared for by other dragonkind (whether it be Darmuntrixen, dragons, or even dragonborn). 

Some Darmuntrixen wish for power driven by their dragon blood, and others wish for a simpler existence akin to their human half. However it may be, depending on their home, they are both gifted and cursed with their natural skill set. All Darmuntrixen are naturally gifted with some extra power that varies from individual to individual. Some include: breath as a weapon, claws to dig, and wings big enough to support their body weight to fly. There are known cases of Darmuntrixen even having webbing on their hands like merfolk, allowing them to swim freely in the water."

A Growing People

Despite the problems some of their kind may have, the Darmuntrixen people are thriving as a non-hostile race, unlike their dragon-kind relatives. The Darmuntrixen value family and loyalty in high regard, making them good partners and adventurers. Darmuntrixen children age at the same rate as humans, to the point that at the age of one year, their mental development will rapidly increase. It isn't common to see a Darmun at the age of two emulate speech patterns found in human six-year-olds. Despite the rapid growth, most Darmuntrixen go back to a "normal" development at the age of ten and are considered adults at the age of eighteen. 

The power the dragon's blood gives is nothing short of a miracle or can be a potential danger to all. The Darmuntrixen has the ability to gain new dragon traits at certain levels. At levels 1, 5, 12, and 16, you can get new dragon traits. (Some traits can only be obtained at higher levels.)

Thirst for Power

Most Darmuntrix are naturally gifted with both combat and magic; some can even harness the blood of their dragon half and shift into a dragon form of their own. Either by channeling the rage inside them or even by channeling a magical stone or scale they have on their person, While they are in full control of this form, the appearance of a dragon is still unsettling to those not used to it, to others around them, or even to themselves. A full dragon form is not found in all Darmuntrixen; sadly, some are known to not possess the ability to transform merely from ignorance, fear, or simply not possessing the capabilities naturally. The Darmuntrixen can even shift when suffering a traumatic event as well. While in their dragon form, they have full control of themselves; otherwise, those who turn into their full dragon form from force only know how to tell apart friends from foes. Afterwards, after a forced transformation, they may not remember the events that may have transpired during the morph into a full dragon.

Most Darmuntrix often use a hybrid or fusion of names from humans, dragons, dragonborns, or even just the names of humans, dragons, and dragonborns themselves. It mostly depends on who the parents are, which will depend on the name.

New Forms of Dragon

Thanks to the joining of humans and dragons, the Darmuntrix have the strange benefit of taking on forms and elements unknown to even their dragon brethren. Taking the form of different metallic (Adamantine: a light shiny purple; Mercury: a shiny pink; Mythril: a milky opal; Orichalcum: a deep glow of orange; Cobalt: a shine of teal) and chromatic (Aqua, Gray, Pink, Purple, Yellow) colors respectfully.
After further study, new "gemstone" dragons were shown to exist as well. A shiny jewel-like appearance on every scale (Ruby: a crimson red, Sapphire: a deep blue, Emerald: a forest green, Quartz: a light pink, Topaz: a bright orange, Amber: a mustard yellow, Amethyst: a light purple, Opal: a mix of aqua and white, Diamond: a clear shine with a white back, Onyx: a deep black)

Your Darmun character has a large variety of natural abilities, the result of thousands of years of Darmuntrixen evolution, dragon blood, and their time with dragons themselves.

Age

Thanks to the dragon blood inside of them, Darmun can normally live as long as 600 years. From infants to toddlers, Darmun grow quickly, but by the time they reach the early stages of childhood, they begin to age much like an average human. Until they hit their "adult" stages in life, the physical aging process slows drastically, and only when they hit around 520 would they be considered elderly.

Alignment

Darmuntrixen tend to be chaotic due to the dragon blood in them, but their orientation (good, neutral, or evil) can vary depending on where and how they were raised. They typically act as desired and have little forethought, despite how intelligent they are, until they are much older. This often brings them trouble with lawful alignment characters. On the opposite side of the scale, they will also fight tooth and nail to protect those they have created a bond with.

Size

Your overall height can fluctuate from men to women; more often, men can be much taller than a normal human, and the most extreme can be considered to be seen as the "large" size group. Women are normally the average size of humans in terms of height. typical overall height being from 5ft or 60 inches to around 10ft or 120 inches.

But some strange occurrences have occurred in which a Darmen woman can be just as tall as an average Darmen man. At the same time, a short man can be seen as the same height as an average human woman (but these cases are uncommon), despite that your average size is normally medium or large.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.

With your breath weapon, cantrip, and resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry, at the 8th level, you are also considered immune to all natural forms of the chosen ancestry.
