The Death Born: Shadows of the Inevitable

The Death Born are the inevitable shadow cast by the light of existence, the silent specters that emerge from the unseen void between moments. They are neither wholly ethereal nor entirely physical, existing in a state of constant dissolution—flickering like candle flames in an unseen wind, their forms shifting between tangible silhouettes and formless wraiths. To look upon them is to glimpse the very essence of mortality, a hushed whisper of the void given shape. Their presence chills the air, drawing warmth from the world as if existence itself recoils from their touch. Some appear as gaunt, skeletal figures wrapped in tattered veils of darkness, their faces obscured by swirling mist, while others take on the faint reflections of the lives they have claimed, their forms an eerie mimicry of the fallen. Their eyes, if they have them, are not windows to a soul, but abysses that devour light, offering nothing in return.

When they move, it is without sound, without effort, as if they are simply shifting from one inevitable moment to the next. Some are draped in the regalia of long-dead monarchs, adorned in armor that rusts as it is seen, while others wear the memories of lost ages like shrouds—robes that flow like ink spilling through water, shifting and dissolving into nothingness. Their limbs, when they reach, seem longer than they should be, their fingers trailing off into nothingness before they ever truly touch.

The world bends subtly around them, unnerved by their presence. The flicker of torchlight struggles to remain steady, shadows stretch unnaturally long, and the weight of their existence presses into the bones of those who stand too near. There is no malice in them, no hunger, no satisfaction in what they are—only the certainty of an ending yet to be written, a promise that everything, in time, must fade.

Ideology and Purpose

Death Born embody the inevitability of endings, serving as silent witnesses to the march of time and the fragility of existence. While their appearance may terrify those who encounter them, their purpose is not rooted in malice or cruelty. Death Born are impartial observers and agents of fate, drawn toward those whose time is nearing its end. They do not choose their targets but are instead bound by the unseen currents of destiny, arriving precisely when the threads of life are meant to fray. This detachment from emotion and intent is what makes them both terrifying and fascinating—beings that are neither good nor evil but exist solely as instruments of the natural order.

Their ideology centers on the balance between life and death. Death Born do not see death as a tragedy but as a necessary conclusion to the cycle of existence. They view the clinging of mortals to life with a mixture of understanding and quiet inevitability. To them, death is not the opposite of life but its fulfillment, the last chapter in a story that must be completed for the world to remain in harmony. In rare moments of reflection, Death Born may even admire the resilience of those who defy them, seeing in such struggles a fleeting beauty unique to mortal existence.

Individuality and Appearance

Despite their somber purpose, Death Born are not without individuality. Some adopt the echoes of personalities they encountered in life, developing distinct quirks or mannerisms that give them a haunting semblance of humanity. Others take on more symbolic appearances, their forms reflecting the cultures or traditions of those they are drawn to. A Death Born manifesting in a war-torn land might resemble a skeletal warrior clad in broken armor, while one appearing in a plague-stricken city might seem like a robed figure with hollow, mournful eyes. These shapes are not chosen but are instead shaped by the memories and fears of the living, a reflection of the collective psyche of those who witness them.

Their interactions with the world are equally enigmatic. While they rarely speak, when they do, their words carry the weight of inevitability, as if spoken by the void itself. Their voices are soft yet resonate in the minds of those who hear them, leaving an indelible impression of finality. When they act, it is with the grace of inevitability—no wasted movement, no hesitation, as if every action they take has already been decided by the currents of fate.

Death-Born Traits

The Death Born are enigmatic entities forged from the essence of mortality itself, embodying the inevitability of endings. They move with silent purpose, untouched by time or emotion, and their presence alters the very fabric of existence.

Age

Death-Born do not age in the conventional sense. Once they take form, they exist in a state of undeath, persisting until they are destroyed or dissipated.

Ability Score Increase

Choose one of the following:

  • (Option A) Your Constitution score increases by 3, and your Charisma score increases by 1.
  • (Option B) Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Strength or Dexterity score increases by 2.

Type

The Death-Born are considered Undead due to their nature, yet they exist in a state that blurs the line between the living and the dead. This classification makes them subject to effects that target undead creatures, though some DMs may choose to treat them as both Humanoid and Undead for balance and storytelling purposes.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and two additional languages of your choice. The second and third languages often reflects your origin, such as the tongue of an ancient kingdom, a necromantic tradition, or an undead dialect.

Dark vision

Accustomed to the dim voids between life and death, the Death-Born can see clearly even in total darkness. You have Darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. Within this range, you can see in dim light as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light, though you cannot discern color—only shades of gray. This trait reflects your origins, enabling you to navigate shadowy realms where others falter.

Deathly Resilience

The essence of death sustains you, granting you resistance to necrotic damage, the energy that most living creatures dread. Furthermore, the deep connection you share with mortality itself makes your mind impervious to certain mortal weaknesses. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened, as the chill of death has dulled your susceptibility to fear and manipulation. These abilities ensure you remain steadfast in the face of threats that might unnerve others.

Chilling Presence

Your presence resonates with the inevitability of death, causing reality itself to waver and the living to feel the weight of their mortality. As an action, you can invoke your Chilling Presence, creating an aura of dread and decay within a 15-foot radius centered on you. This aura lasts for 1 minute or until you lose concentration (as if concentrating on a spell). When you activate this ability, and at the start of each of your turns while it is active, creatures of your choice within the aura are affected as follows:

Dread of Mortality

Each creature must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier). On a failure, they are Frightened until the aura ends. If a creature is already Frightened at the start of its turn, it takes 1d8 necrotic damage as your presence saps its vitality.

Crippling Weakness (Level 6+)

Starting at level 6, creatures that fail their saving throw also find their bodies and resolve faltering. They must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) at the start of their turn or:

Suffer disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks until the start of their next turn.

Be unable to take reactions until the start of their next turn.

Soul-Shattering Presence (Level 12+)

Starting at level 12, your Chilling Presence draws vitality from your enemies and shares it with your allies. When you activate this ability, you can choose to unleash its full power, causing the following additional effects:

Siphon Vitality: All creatures of your choice within the aura take 4d6 necrotic damage upon activation. For each creature damaged in this way, all allies within the aura at the same time gain temporary hit points equal to half the total necrotic damage dealt (minimum of 1 temporary hit point per ally).

Shatter the Spirit: If a creature fails its Constitution saving throw for Crippling Weakness, it becomes Stunned until the start of its next turn instead of suffering the normal effects of Crippling Weakness.

Once you use Soul-Shattering Presence, you cannot use it again until you complete a long rest.

Fated Step

Your innate connection to death allows you to step through the veil, appearing before those whose time has come. When a creature within 30 feet of you is reduced to 0 hit points, reduced to 1 hit point, or is unconscious and has hit points less than your Charisma modifier, you may use your reaction to teleport to their location.

Upon arriving:

  • You touch the creature as an avatar of death. If the creature is at 1 hit point or unconscious and meets the HP requirement, they immediately die, bypassing immunity to death effects.
  • You do not provoke attacks of opportunity when teleporting, and any movement restrictions or conditions (such as being grappled or restrained) affecting you are immediately ended.

Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest. At 6th level, you may use this ability twice per long rest.

Balance Note: Gods, immortal beings, and entities of similar stature may defy the guaranteed death effect at the DM's discretion.

Darkness Nature

As a being sustained by necrotic energy, you are freed from the needs of mortal physiology. You do not require food, drink, or air to survive. Instead of sleeping, you enter a motionless, trance-like state for 4 hours each day, during which you remain fully aware of your surroundings.

While in this state you cannot take damage from non-magical physical attacks.

This state replaces sleep, allowing you to recover and prepare for your next journey into the mortal world. While others dream, your mind processes only the stark reality of existence and the endless march of time.
