Homebrew Canidar Species Details

Physical Traits

Canidar resemble a blend of humanoid and canine features, with lean, sinewy frames built for agility rather than endurance. Their fur varies in length and color depending on lineage, from short and bristly to thick and shaggy. Their heads are distinctly canine, complete with sharp ears, keen eyes, and powerful muzzles that can track a scent for miles.

Though intelligent, Canidar have an instinct-driven nature, relying on their heightened senses rather than deep introspection. Their society values pack bonds, loyalty, and adaptability, often forming tight-knit clans or integrating into other cultures as scouts, rangers, or messengers.

Abilities & Features

  • Quadrupedal Sprint: Canidar can drop to all fours as a free action, increasing their movement speed to 40 feet. However, they cannot wield weapons, cast spells with somatic components, or perform complex tasks while in this state. Standing back up requires a bonus action.

  • Keen Senses: Canidar have advantage on Perception checks that rely on smell. Their acute noses allow them to track creatures and detect faint scents from great distances.

  • Darkvision: Accustomed to nocturnal hunting, Canidar have darkvision up to 60 feet.

  • Slender Frame: Due to their lean build, Canidar have lower Constitution than most races, making them more susceptible to exhaustion and damage, but they compensate with heightened Dexterity and Wisdom.

  • Pack Mentality: When working alongside allies, Canidar gain advantage on saving throws against being frightened. Additionally, if an ally is within 10 feet, they can use the Help action as a bonus action once per short rest.

  • Instinctual Reflexes: When reduced to 0 hit points, a Canidar can make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw. On a success, they drop to 1 hit point instead. This feature can be used once per long rest.

Society & Culture

Canidar live in tightly bonded groups, whether as nomadic packs, city-dwelling courier guilds, or as elite hunting scouts. Their language consists of a mix of Common, guttural growls, and subtle body language, allowing them to communicate effectively even in silence.

They have an innate wariness of strangers but form unbreakable bonds with those they trust. While some Canidar integrate into civilized life, others remain wild wanderers, always seeking the next scent to chase.

Canidar Traits

The Canidar are swift and instinct-driven dog-folk, balancing agility and keen senses with a pack-oriented mentality. They can move on all fours for bursts of speed, track prey with an exceptional sense of smell, and rely on their sharp reflexes in combat. Loyal to their allies and wary of strangers, Canidar thrive in tight-knit groups, embodying both the discipline of a trained hound and the wild cunning of a lone predator.
