Homebrew Coral Tiefling Species Details

Once there were tieflings as most people know them, children of devils that are in reds and oranges and yellows that have no wings with large horns, long tails and fiery eyes. However, the demonic lords and higher devils foresaw what was going to happen to the sun and knew that the Flarelands, once the birthplace of this species of tieflings, would need to be abandoned. The devils made all of the tieflings of Asmodeus and Zariel higher devils as well so that they could live down in the hells with their noble brethren and escape the apocalypse before it happened. In their prejudice, Asmodeus and Zariel chose to neglect a certain demon lord's children on purpose wanting the tieflings of Mephistopheles to suffer for the rest of time before dying out. These tieflings felt betrayed and abandoned by their own kind, cursing the names of the demon lords they once worshiped. Mephistopheles, however, had a plan. He went to an old lover of his, the lord of the seas in the Flarelands, Coatalin, and asked him to save his demonic children in the ways that he could not. Coatalin agreed and changed the tiefling's biological code, forcing them into the sea, knowing that the seabound creatures would be the most powerful in the future for they would be his sister's, Her Grace, the Moon's, chosen people. So the tieflings took on a more aquatic appearance with finned ears, webbed fingers, slitted eyes and sharper teeth. Tails with fin sails along the ridges and skin that was more the colors of coral reefs and the water around them rather than the warm tones of harsh deserts and fiery hellscapes. Coatalin did not know where to place the tieflings at first, until he found the coral reefs, a place that would be protected and admired until the end of time. Unfortunately, there were things that even Coatalin did not forsee. The sun, in its last days before exploding, grew hotter and hotter and hotter, blanching the coral reefs white, including the coral on top of the tiefling's heads, as the coral replaced their usual horns. This caused the tieflings to have a hatred fester for all of the different races that existed on the surface, believing it to be their fault, with their machines and overuse of resources that made the sun burn too hot and destroy the tiefling's coral reefs.

Water Breathing

When Coral Tieflings are submerged in water they change their breathing from lungs to the gills along the sides of their neck, allowing them to stay under the water for as long as they desire. 

Filter Tongue

An interesting evolutionary trait of Coral Tieflings, it has placed many of them into higher positions, taste testers for government officials, law enforcement officers for those who left the life of piracy, and very skilled assassins and thieves as they can test most low grade poisons before slipping them into a drink or dish. 

Water Lung

When the individual fails the saving throw they take the 5d10 poison damage from water entering their lungs and receive the drowning condition for two rounds until they cough up all of the water. If the person reaches 0 hit points from this attack then they immediately bloat and fall dead from the water being too much for their lungs.
