Homebrew Cambion Species Details

Born of Fiendish Flesh

A cambion is the offspring of a mortal and a true fiend—or, more rarely, the child of an incubus and a succubus. Unlike tieflings, whose infernal heritage may be diluted across generations, cambions bear a direct and undeniable connection to the Lower Planes.

Their birth is a disturbing affair: they appear stillborn, showing no breath or pulse, yet responding to touch. Some legends say they weigh as much as a horse at birth. This eerie state persists until the age of seven, when they begin to resemble their mortal parent more closely—though their red skin, curling horns, leathery wings, and sinuous tails betray their unholy origins.

A Heavy Burden

To be met with hushed whispers, fearful gazes, or outright hostility is the lot of a cambion. Many see them as harbingers of doom or agents of corruption. Unlike tieflings, who may struggle with suspicion due to distant infernal ancestry, cambions carry immediate and undeniable proof of a fiendish lineage.

Some strive to prove their worth despite the stigma, attempting to rise above their origins. Others embrace the fear they inspire, using it as a tool to command, dominate, or intimidate. Whether feared or revered, cambions are never ignored.

Direct Fiendish Heritage

Cambions bear unmistakable traits from their fiendish parentage. These include:

  • Horns – Smooth, ridged, or curling like a ram’s.
  • Eyes – Often glowing with eerie red, gold, or silver hues.
  • Skin – Ranging from human tones to deep reds, blues, or ashen grays.
  • Tails – Long and prehensile, often twitching with emotion.
  • Wings – Some possess vestigial or fully developed leathery wings.
  • Voices – Rich and resonant, carrying an unsettling presence.

Even the most human-looking cambions exude a sense of otherworldly menace, an aura that makes even the bravest hesitate before crossing them.

Ambition and Isolation

Cambions are creatures of ambition, driven by an innate hunger for power. Their infernal blood fuels their desire for control, pushing them to rise above lesser beings.

Rarely accepted by either fiends or mortals, cambions learn to rely on their own strength. Many carve their place in the world as:

  • Commanders – Leading armies through fear and power.
  • Warlords – Ruling over lawless lands with iron will.
  • Shadowed Nobles – Influencing politics from behind the throne.
  • Outcasts – Drifting through the world, searching for purpose.

Though they often walk alone, they do not walk powerless. Every cambion has the potential to rule, destroy, or remake the world around them.

Cambion Names

Cambion names reflect their mortal heritage, fiendish ancestry, or personal ambition. Some take on Infernal names, while others adopt titles that command fear and respect.

Male Names: Varax, Kaemor, Xadreth, Malvas, Zeviron, Drakhel, Orzar
Female Names: Seraxa, Velrissa, Zyrel, Kashara, Maerza, Thalyria, Orissa
Titles & Monikers: Dreadlord, Malice, Bloodquill, Sinspire, Doomcaller, Felltongue

Many cambions rename themselves, forging a new identity that reflects their chosen path—whether that be tyrant, scholar, mercenary, or king.

Met with Dread

The world does not trust cambions. Their very existence blurs the line between mortal and fiend, making them objects of suspicion and fear. Even those who strive to do good must work twice as hard to earn trust, while those who lean into their fiendish nature often find the path of conquest laid before them.

Yet, for all the darkness in their blood, cambions are masters of their own fate. They wield the might of the Lower Planes as they see fit—for glory, power, vengeance, or something greater still.

Cambion Traits

Cambions inherit formidable traits from their fiendish parentage, bearing both the strength and the sinister gifts of their infernal bloodline.

Fierce Presence

When another creature hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to add your Charisma modifier to your Armor Class for that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss you. After you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Otherworldly Charm

You can cast the charm person spell once at will with this trait, and you regain the ability to cast it this way when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Otherworldly Fire Ray

As an action, you can hurl a bolt of searing energy at a creature within 120 feet, forcing them to make a Dexterity saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d8 fire damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d8 at 6th level, 4d8 at 11th level, and 5d8 at 16th level. After you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Charisma score increases by 2.

Age

Tieflings mature at the same rate as humans but live a few years longer.

Size

Tieflings are about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Thanks to your infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Otherworldly Resistance

Though you may have been born and bound to the Material Plane you possess a natural resistance to the forces that permeate it. You are resistant to either cold, fire, lightning or poison damage. Once you choose this resistance you cannot choose another.

Cambion Magic

You learn the magic of those formed from evil. You can cast the command, detect magic, and alter self spells, each of which you can cast once without expending a spell slot. You regain the ability to cast these spells in this way when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for all these spells.
