Homebrew Chronovyrn Species Details

The Chronovyrn (Bronze Dragonkin of Aeonthra)

Physical Description

The Chronovyrn are a humanoid species with distinct bronze dragon-like features. Their bodies are covered in shimmering bronze scales that seem to subtly shift in hue depending on the angle of light, creating an almost liquid metallic effect. Their eyes glow faintly with a golden hue, with slit pupils resembling that of dragons.

They have a pair of small, leathery wings sprouting from their backs, which allow for limited flight. Though not capable of sustained long-distance flight, they can glide gracefully or use bursts of speed to maneuver in combat or traverse the rugged terrain of their homeland. Their tails are long and whip-like, aiding in balance and agility.

Chronovyrn stand taller than the average human, ranging from 6 to 7 feet tall, with a lean but muscular build suited for both speed and strength. Their hands and feet end in sharp claws, a reminder of their draconic ancestry, and their voices carry a natural reverberation that feels as though it echoes through time itself.

Homeland: The Island of Aeonthra

The Chronovyrn evolved on Aeonthra, a mystical island isolated from the rest of the world by a perpetual temporal storm. The island exists in a state of temporal flux, with pockets of time moving faster or slower than the outside world. This unique environment shaped the Chronovyrn, forcing them to adapt to the unstable flow of time.

Aeonthra is a lush, mountainous island dotted with ancient ruins and crystalline obelisks that hum with temporal energy. The Chronovyrn believe these structures were left behind by an ancient civilization that first mastered time magic, and they have built their cities around these relics, treating them as sacred sites.

Biological Adaptations

The Chronovyrn have evolved several unique traits to thrive in their time-shifting environment:

  1. Temporal Perception: They can sense shifts in the flow of time, allowing them to predict events seconds before they occur. This gives them an almost supernatural reflex in combat and daily life.

  2. Time-Resistant Physiology: Their bodies are resistant to the effects of time magic, making them immune to aging spells, temporal stasis, and similar effects.

  3. Bronze Dragon Heritage: Their draconic lineage grants them a natural affinity for lightning magic, though this is secondary to their mastery of time.

  4. Limited Flight: Their wings allow for short bursts of flight (30 feet per round) or gliding over long distances.

Culture and Society

The Chronovyrn have built a society deeply intertwined with the concept of time. They see time not as a linear path but as a vast, interconnected web. Their culture revolves around understanding and manipulating this web to better their lives and protect their homeland.

  1. The Aeonkeepers: The spiritual and scholarly leaders of the Chronovyrn, the Aeonkeepers are masters of time magic and the guardians of Aeonthra’s temporal relics. They are responsible for teaching the younger generations and maintaining the balance of time on the island.

  2. The Temporal Guard: The elite warriors of the Chronovyrn, trained to use their time-manipulating abilities in combat. They serve as protectors of Aeonthra and its people, as well as scouts who venture into the temporal storms surrounding the island.

  3. Rituals and Festivals: The Chronovyrn celebrate the Cycle of Aeons, a yearly festival where they honor the flow of time and their ancestors. During this festival, they perform elaborate dances that mimic the movement of time, accompanied by music played on instruments that produce haunting, otherworldly tones.

  4. Language: Their language, Chronisyl, is a complex tongue that incorporates tones and rhythms to convey temporal concepts. It is said that a single word in Chronisyl can carry multiple meanings depending on the "time" in which it is spoken.

Abilities and Magic

The Chronovyrn have developed a unique form of time magic, blending their innate draconic power with their deep understanding of temporal energy. This magic is both practical and combative:

  1. Temporal Manipulation: They can slow down or speed up time within a small radius, affecting themselves, allies, or enemies. For example, they might slow an enemy’s movements or hasten an ally’s reflexes.

  2. Time Step: A short-range teleportation ability that allows them to "blink" a few seconds into the future, reappearing up to 30 feet away from their original position.

  3. Chronoshift (Racial Ability): Once per day, a Chronovyrn can rewind time for themselves by up to 6 seconds (1 round in combat), undoing an action or avoiding an attack.

  4. Lightning Breath: As descendants of bronze dragons, they retain the ability to unleash a cone of lightning, though it is less potent than that of their draconic ancestors.

Religion and Philosophy

The Chronovyrn worship Aeonath, the Dragon of Eternity, a divine figure they believe governs the flow of time. According to their mythology, Aeonath created Aeonthra as a sanctuary for those who respect the delicate balance of time. The Chronovyrn see themselves as Aeonath’s chosen guardians, tasked with preserving this balance at all costs.

Their philosophy emphasizes the importance of living in harmony with time rather than attempting to dominate it. They believe that every moment, no matter how fleeting, has its place in the grand tapestry of existence.

Adventurers and Allies

Chronovyrn adventurers are rare, as most prefer to remain on Aeonthra to protect their homeland. However, some are sent into the outside world as emissaries or seekers of knowledge. These individuals often become powerful wizards, sorcerers, or monks, using their time-manipulating abilities to aid their allies and thwart their enemies.

Chronovyrn are natural allies to those who value balance and wisdom, but they are wary of those who seek to exploit time magic for personal gain.

Chronovyrn Traits

Chronovryn's are a very rare species to behold, with the ability to manipulate time in a localised area and alter the results. These Draconic time manipulators have some tricks up their sleeves to protect themselves.

Temporal Percetion

Temporal Perception:

The Chronovyrn's most distinctive biological adaptation is their profound connection to the flow of time, manifesting as Temporal Perception. This ability allows them to sense subtle shifts and distortions in the temporal fabric that surrounds them, granting them an almost preternatural awareness of events unfolding around them.

Time Step

As a bonus action, you can teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. You must finish a short or long rest before using this ability again.

Chronoshift

Once per day, you can rewind time for yourself, undoing an action or reaction you just took.

Temporal Breath

You can exhale a breath of pure timestream energy in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus), taking 2d6 lightning damage on a failed save or half as much on a success.

Timestreams Blessing

You gain +1 Dexterity as you have learnt to move your body in manoeuvrable ways especially after moving through the time ways.

You gain +2 Intelligence as you have spent many years studying the time ways and moving back and forth through the eras of the land. This allows you to retain more information and recall events throughout time.
