Homebrew Woodsmen Species Details

The living trees known as Woodsmen are often seen as the gentlest of giants. They tend to their groves and leave all the rest of the world alone. They tend not to anger and instead awkwardly understand the strangers that have begun to encroach on their hidden homes. Now their forests are cut and their saplings are being taken and these gentle giants will no longer stand idly by. Trunks creak, branches splinter and the tree herds are on the move, away from danger or towards it, it's probably best not to get in their way or interupt their peaceful lives.

Lumbering Giants

Woodsmen tower above most other humanoids, standing over 8 feet (2.13 m) tall. They are, for all intents and purposes, living trees,  and if they were to stand motionless would not be distinguishable from their unawakened brethren. Their branching arms curl up into a hand of leaves and twigs, and their legs consist of roots that bury into the soil with each step.

 

 

Woodsmen Traits

Your Woodsmen character has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Strength score increases by 2.

Age

Woodsmen physically mature slowly, continuously growing their entire lives, living usually up to 750 years, some even 1000+. Mental maturity is expected to be achieved by the age 100.

Alignment

Most woodsmen are good, believing in the value of a peaceful life. They also tend toward neutral or chaotic

Size

Loxodons stand between 7 and 8 feet tall. Their massive bodies weigh between 300 and 400 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Natural Armor

You have bark skin. Not being able to wear armour, your AC is 13 + your Constitution modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield’s benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.

Timber

Being made of leaves, vines and wood, you are vulnerable to fire damage

Plant-Based

Although magical and a different shape, you are still considered to be a plant. You have advantage on saves against being poisoned.

Strong Vines and Roots

Thanks to your powerful grasp and roots, you have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks.

Take Root

A woodsmen can increase its defensive capabilities at the cost of movement, rooting its self into the ground. As a bonus action, you reduce your speed to 0 until you take a bonus action to uproot yourself. Your Armor Class increases by 1 and if you are subject to an effect that would force you to make a Dexterity saving throw, you can use a reaction to make a Constitution saving throw instead.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan.
