Homebrew Teddy Bear Species Details

So… you’re a Teddy Bear. Like an actual stuffed animal brought to “life” by friendship, magic, or some other nonsense? Huh. As a fluffy, adorable little monster, cuteness is essential to your survival, but it is far from your only tool. As most enemies are significantly larger than you, you have extensive practice jumping high enough to kick them in the face when charm fails you.

Most Teddy Bears are created by arcane experiments gone wrong, a child’s wish, or a genie with particularly bad hearing. As such, few live amongst their own kind with many spending their lives in hiding. Some are sickeningly sweet with the innocence of a child, while others, particularly those who have outlived their creators, become cynical and untrusting.

The lifespan of a Teddy Bear varies wildly as their only “natural” cause of death is when the magic animating them degrades to the point it can no longer sustain life. They are adults from “birth”, never experiencing any of the other stages of life.

Typical Habitats

Teddy Bears are rare enough that a community of them is unlikely, but not impossible. Having no true homeland, a Teddy Bear village can appear in any setting or climate, though it is likely hidden and built for creatures of their small stature. Such villages may be full of whimsy and magic with Magic Items and gear for small creatures available for trade. Their buildings may be constructed from odd materials with taverns that sell overly sweet beverages.

Teddy Bear Traits

As a Teddy Bear, you have these special traits.

Build-A-Beast

Teddy Bears are extremely varied, with many custom built. This grants you the following benefits.

  • You don’t require air, food, or drink.
  • You’ve been designed to jump to great heights to allow you to live in a world built for those much larger than you. You can cast the Jump spell targeting yourself with no components. You always have the spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Short Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.

Cloak of Cuteness

Your cute appearance provides an effective defense mechanism. While you remains motionless, you are indistinguishable from an ordinary Teddy Bear.

When necessary, you can crank your cuteness up to to the maximum. Starting at character level 3, you learn the Charm Person spell. You always have the spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.

Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for the spells you cast with this trait (choose the ability when you select the species).

Darkvision

You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.

Sweetheart

You are well-versed in getting others to do your bidding. You gain Proficiency with Charisma (Deception), Charisma (Intimidation), or Charisma (Persuasion), selected when you choose this species.
