Homebrew Wraithborn Species Details
Wraithborn: Echoes of the Veil
Drifting between the realms of the living and the dead, the Wraithborn are spectral echoes of mortal beings who, for one reason or another, have not fully passed into the afterlife. They are not true undead, nor are they entirely alive—they exist in a liminal state, their essence bound to the material world yet always feeling the pull of the Shadowfell or other planes of existence. Some Wraithborn are created when resurrection magic goes wrong, leaving the soul only half-restored to its body. Others arise from tragic or violent deaths, their spirits refusing to fade due to unfinished business, strong emotions, or sheer willpower.
Flickering Between Worlds
Wraithborn do not experience the world as other mortals do. Their senses extend beyond the physical, allowing them to perceive lingering spirits, echoes of the past, and the whispers of forgotten voices. To them, the world is layered—a place where the living and the dead overlap, where unseen things move just beyond mortal sight.
Because of this unique perception, Wraithborn are often viewed with suspicion or fear. Some believe they are omens of death, walking reminders of mortality. Others see them as cursed beings, tethered to something unnatural. In some cultures, Wraithborn are revered as seers, mediums, or harbingers of fate, able to commune with spirits and foresee glimpses of destiny.
Ethereal Beings, Mortal Struggles
Despite their ghostly nature, Wraithborn still interact with the physical world. They walk among the living, though their bodies seem slightly unreal—faintly translucent in certain lights, their forms never quite casting proper shadows. Some Wraithborn can alter their appearance, making themselves look fully solid or briefly disappearing from sight altogether.
Unlike true undead, Wraithborn retain free will and emotion, though many experience an eerie sense of detachment. They often struggle with the remnants of their past life, memories slipping away like mist. Some cling desperately to the echoes of who they once were, while others embrace their spectral nature, seeing themselves as something beyond mortal limitations.
Tethered to Existence
A Wraithborn’s existence is often defined by what keeps them tethered to the material plane. Some have a deep purpose, an unresolved conflict, or a lingering obsession that holds them here. Others have no memory of what binds them and must search for the truth of their past.
Those who lose their purpose risk fading entirely, becoming nothing more than wandering phantoms or vanishing into the void. Because of this, many Wraithborn seek meaning in adventure, revenge, redemption, or knowledge—anything that will solidify their place in the world and prevent them from slipping away.
A Fate Undecided
Unlike true undead, Wraithborn are not bound to a singular fate. Some seek to restore their lost humanity, hoping to one day become fully mortal again. Others embrace their ghostly existence, using their spectral abilities to move unseen, avoid harm, or strike from the shadows.
But one question lingers in the back of every Wraithborn’s mind: What happens when I am finally ready to let go? Do they find peace in the afterlife? Or do they simply cease to exist? No two Wraithborn share the same answer, but all must eventually face the truth of their existence.
