Homebrew Axolotlians (Axolotl Race) Species Details

History

Axolotl are born in the deep cold ocean out of society's grasp living their lives. They are small aquatic salamanders that life off the small creatures, and like cold environments. They got discovered by men because of their cute appearance and even tried to be used as a food source.
Men not knowing Axolotl are very rare and exotic as they are, they were almost brought to extinction. Men looked for these creatures for their cute colorful appearance but mostly for they regenerative properties. 

Axolotl's have something most creatures do not posses in this world, they can regrow their limbs and even seem to be resilient against poisons. This made many scientists and scholars hunt for them to figure out their secrets. Some of them even wanting it to see if they can gain eternal life.

Suffering and Cursed

 
After many years of being hunted down by humanity for food, experiments and forced into captivity as pets. Many of the Axolotl were in peril and afraid of humanity, but there were a few that wanted to do something against it but lacked the power. Since Axolotl are tiny creatures with no offensive capabilities, there was one Axolotl who started praying.
He has seen other humanoids use this method and he prayed to the Deity of Suffering, in the hope to relief them of their suffering and torture of humanity.

This grabbed the attention of Loviatar the Goddess of Pain, she noticed the suffering of the Axolotl and she quite enjoyed what she saw. So as a twisted reward she cursed the Axolotl with the same thing they feared, humanity.

 

Evolution and Mutation

Now the entire Axolotl race is cursed because of Loviatar sadistic gift. The Axolotl started to mutate and morph into something new, something they never wanted in the first place.

They became a humanoid race, the mix between an Axolotl that is aquatic and a human becoming Amphibious in the progress. 
Now being much harder for them to hide from humanity, they needed to find ways to embrace and or protect themselves. The Axolotl now became even more hunted down by humanity and even having internal conflicts within themselves, becoming the thing they feared for so long. 

This fueled Loviatar's sadistic nature of seeing the Axolotl not only suffering from physical pain but also psychological.

 

Steadfast

The Axolotl has endured so much torture and suffering but they remain resilient, strong and steadfast. They try to see everything as positive as they can, looking at the bright side of life. Not wanting to slip back into the past and the darkness that surrounds it.

This also reflects back on their small transformations they have gained, like the ability to remove toxins from their body or the ability to recover their health during though situations.

The Axolotl race might be cursed and have been given a bad hand in life, but this only fuels more their will to live and enjoy anything life can provide them. 
They will always remain the happy go-lucky race with the cute looks, always looking for the next adventure or new places to discover.

 

Axolotlians (Axolotl Race) Traits

Axolotl's get their traits from their aquatic heritage, living underwater and having both gills as lungs and having regenerative properties.

Ability Score Increase

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one of those scores by 2 and increase a different score by 1.

Age

Axolotl reach adulthood in around 5 years, but have been known to live up to 60 years.

Alignment

While most Axolotl are seen as carefree and loving animals because of their small posture and cute looks. They are all not the same, although most Axolotl are Good and either Chaotic or Neutral. Any kind of alignment may fit an Axolotl since they deeply take over traits of their environment and people close to them or raised them.

Size

Axolotl stand between 2 and 4 feet tall and average between 20 - 30 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a swimming speed of 40 feet.

Amphibious

You can breathe air and water.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 ft. as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light (only shades of gray).

Water Dependency

If you fail to immerse yourself in water for at least 1 hour during a day, you suffer one level of exhaustion at the end of that day. You can only recover from this exhaustion through magic or by immersing yourself in water for at least 1 hour.

Aquatic Survival

You have proficiency in the Survival skill.

Axolotl Resilence

You have resistance to poison and cold damage but vulnerable to fire damage. You have advantage against being poisoned and the poisoned condition and are immune to diseases.

Adaptive Regeneration

You gain the ability to passively regen HP.
When engaging in combat on the start of the Axolotlians turn, they recover HP equal to their current level.
However, they do not gain this benefit when at the start of their turn they are under the effect of the following status conditions: Incapacitated,Unconscious or Exhaustion. 
If the Axolotlian takes fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the their next turn.

Axolotl Regeneration

You gain the ability to regrow limbs back when severed, this only include ones that aren't lethal. (Fingers, toes, hands, feet, arms and legs)
These limbs can regrow back in the span of 1d6 days.

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
