Homebrew Al-Mi'raj* Species Details

Al-Mi'raj are small humanoids, standing between 3 and 3.5 feet tall (90 cm to 1.10 m) and weighing between 20 and 30 pounds (10-15 kg). Their bodies are covered in soft fur, which varies in color depending on their environment—ranging from pure white to earthy brown or even deep black for better camouflage.

Their most distinctive feature is their long, spiraled horn, which can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) long. This horn, usually ivory or golden in hue, serves as both a natural weapon and a conduit for magical energy.

With large, expressive ears that can swivel in different directions, they are highly attuned to their surroundings. Their powerful hind legs grant them incredible leaping abilities, allowing them to escape predators, navigate difficult terrain, or strike from unexpected angles in combat.

Al-Mi'raj are a nomadic and isolationist people, preferring to live in enchanted forests, mystical glades, or remote islands infused with magic. They form small tribal communities where respect for elders and territorial protection are paramount.

Their society is guided by a council of wise leaders known as the Horned Elders, whose horns are often inscribed with ancient runes—marks of their connection to nature and magic. Young Al-Mi'raj, called hornlings, spend their early years exploring under the watchful eyes of their elders, learning survival skills that rely on cunning and agility rather than brute force.

Many believe that Al-Mi'raj are messengers of fey beings or nature spirits, and they often live in harmony with dryads, satyrs, or other denizens of the Feywild. Though naturally wary of outsiders, they are quick to recognize kindness and may form bonds with those who respect their lands and traditions.

Their horn acts as a natural magical conduit, allowing them to sense magical disturbances or enchantments nearby. Some individuals even develop supernatural abilities, such as the power to vanish in a flash of fey light or perceive through illusions.

This connection to magic, however, has also made them targets. Wizards, sorcerers, and alchemists covet Al-Mi'raj horns for their supposed arcane properties, believing them to be key ingredients in powerful spells or potions. Because of this, Al-Mi'raj tend to stay hidden, avoiding direct interaction with the outside world whenever possible.

They favor agility and cleverness over direct confrontation. If threatened, an Al-Mi'raj would rather leap away and outmaneuver an enemy than engage in a head-on fight. However, when cornered or when their kin are in danger, they can become formidable foes—using their speed, intelligence, and natural magic to confound and strike unexpectedly.

They hold deep respect for druids, rangers, and those who live in harmony with nature, but are suspicious of wizards, alchemists, and artificers, whom they see as potential threats.

 

 

Although rare, some Al-Mi'raj choose to leave their secluded homes and venture into the wider world. Their motivations may include:

• A Debt of Honor – Some Al-Mi'raj pledge loyalty to an outsider who saved them or their kin.
