Homebrew Beorn Species Details

(version 2) The Beorn are descendants of the great Beorn, a werebear like creature that protected the Sword Coast and neighboring lands.

Beorn was of immense size and strength for a man and retained his size and strength in bear-form. Most have black hair (in either form) and thick black beards and broad shoulders (in human form).  There are those from the north with white hair and some red or brown.   While not a "giant" outright, the Beorn's human form is unusually large.  At full height they can reach nearly 11 feet tall but most are between 7 and 9 feet tall.  There have been stories of the Beorn carrying and wielding multiple two handed weapons.  While generally peaceful, the Beorn will fight fiercely to protect their land and the creatures that inhabit it.  Most Beorn are nomadic and solitary, wandering the lands in search of answers.  Some have been known to settle near humanoid settlements.

The Beorn follow a path called the "The Arc of Time" this is a constant reminder that their time in the world of men is limited.

The Arc of Time:

Childhood:  As children, the Beorn are often raised in the forest by their kin.  They are, by all accounts, normal human children.  No bigger or smaller.  However, they are tended to by their giant parents and grow up living off the land and learning about the creatures within it.

Young Adult: As a teenager, the Beorn begin to feel the pull.  It is soft whisper and they are introduced to the Fae and the life force.  They will often begin an apprenticeship as a crafter, fighter, ranger or druid.  Still human in size, these youngsters are set entrusted with the great writing and stories.  At this point many have witnessed an older Beorn leave the tribe for the forest, unable to reject the call any longer.   Young adults learn to transform into small or medium size bears and to wander the forests as protective eyes.  These smaller Beorn are called cubs and but are often the fiercest of fighters.

Adult: As an adult, the Beorn begin to grow.  Most men at this point are over 7 feet tall and the women are at least 6 and half feet tall.  Those chosen as guardians (Fighters, Rangers, Barbarians) are trained to fight in the wild ways of the Beorn.  Those with the magical connection study the art of the shaman and druids.  But all learn that they must protect the smallest of creatures from the forces of death.  These Beorn can change into larger bears, grizzlies, cave bears and polar bears.  They are the defenders of the forest.

Older: As older adults, the Beorn are very large, some nearly 11 feet tall.  These are the masters of the Beorn.  Taking up leadership and tutor positions, these giants struggle to keep their heads in the world of men.  Some leave the tribe and will become entirely wild.  These Beorn are the Swords of the Forest.  They seek the greatest danger to their forest and destroy it.

Ancients: Their are few Beorn that can be called ancients, but those that do are at once wise and dangerous.  Most will never be mistaken for a giant, a human or a bear.  They are fae, wild magic incarnate.  Hulking creatures that wander the forest.  Few are ever spotted and but for those that have seen them, it is a life changing event.

Beorn Traits

Beorn also known as Skin-changers were a race of large men who could turn into bears.

Class Limitations

Beorn can only specialize in Nature classes: Ranger, Druid, Fighter or BarbarianUnder special circumstances the DM may allow for a Rogue, Mage or Cleric class but these are at a decided disadvantage.

Barbarians:  Misunderstood as the Beorn are, many often think of them as wild barbarians.  However, these gentle giants often follow less aggressive pursuits.  Still some do become Barbarians, Beorn a fearcily protective their forest and friends.

Fighters: Beorn are the guardians of the forest.  Often times these giants take up posts as soldiers watching over their land.  Beorn have fondness for those that dedicate their lives to the protection of others.

Rangers: Hunters, the Beorn make their living in the woods and often become professionals as Rangers.  It is through the Rangers that Beorn stay connected to the world.

Druids: More than a 3rd of all Beorn are Druids.  A magical connection to the life force of the forest and deep respect for all living creatures sits at the bottom of these souls.

DM PERMISSION ONLY:

Rogues: Beorn are not concerned with financial gain and will seldom become thieves or treasure hunters.  They do seek out magic and power to protect their realms but not for their own gain.  Generally speaking, a Beorn will look at the rogue with pity and a but of humor.  Like a cat chasing a ball of string.  It's pointless but funny.

Mages and Sorcerers:  Beorn almost never become these academic elites.  They do not feel comfortable in the urban schools and the free spirits are a challenge to any master that would teach them the ways of magic.  The Beorn, however, hold these scholars in high esteem and see there path as worthy.  While wisdom tells them that many of these magi cannot be trusted with the the power they wield, they non-the-less respect their goals.

Clerics: Beorn never become true clerics, some have been called shaman but they do not follow the gods of men.  They are creatures of the forest, like the Fae.  A Beorn, can work with a cleric but is always suspicious of his motives.
