Homebrew Dragon Species Details

After thousands of years of age, some Dragons use their natural shapeshifting ability to take a humanoid form.

Dragon Traits

With the blood of legends in your blood, you gain traits that you've had since birth, and are gifts from above.

Higher Senses

In any form, you maintain 30ft of Blindsight (Blind Beyond). You gain proficiency in the Perception skill, and advantage on DEX saving throws against effects that you can see while not blinded, deafened, or incapacitated.

Form of Magic and Blood

You can cast the Polymorph spell focused only on yourself once every 3 long rests. You have the option to change into your True Draconic Form, based off of your species. If you do so, after you return to your chosen form, you will gain 3 points of exhaustion that you can get rid of via long rests.

Lair

Every dragon has a lair where, due to your accumulation of treasures, you take everything that has value. Sleeping in your lair and under your treasure reduces your rest time to half the time required. Anyone who approaches up to 120 feet from your lair alerts you to possible invaders, but does not give the exact location of them. The lair should typically be built in a terrain that fits your ancestry. Having a lair in not optional.

In addition, with your lair comes your horde of treasure. Discuss with your DM an appropriate amount of wealth to have in your horde, or, roll 4d4 x 10. Your DM will add an extra amount that they deem fit, and they will keep that information for themselves. You will not know how much money you have in your horde, and your primal urge will be to expand it. You can use money from your horde, but only if you pass a Wisdom Save, DC determined by your DM. You will have a natural urge to add things to your horde.

You will need to make a Wisdom Save in order to restrain yourself from picking up shiny things and gold, whether it’s yours or not. DC is set by 10 + WIS Modifier.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Dragons reach maturity at around the age of 100, they however are not bound by a limited lifespan and can live for as long as they are not slain. The oldest recorded dragon in history was said to be over 4000 years old.

Alignment

As powerful creatures who are not afraid to express themselves and impact the world around them, dragons tend away from neutrality and towards the extremes of the alignment scale.

Size

Similar to changelings, no matter what race you present yourself as, your size is Medium. True Sight can reveal, not your draconic form in it's entirety, but you are seen as a Huge Creature, in spirit but not body.

Speed

Maintaining some sense of agility from your life with wings, your base walking speed is 35ft.

Draconic Blood

You have draconic blood. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Blood table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Draconic Blood

Dragon Damage Type Breath Weapon
Black Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Blue Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Brass Fire 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Bronze Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Copper Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Gold Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Green Poison 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
Red Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Silver Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
White Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic, and two other languages of your choice. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.
