Homebrew Ashen Species Details

From the moment when the Astral Star found it’s home in the Hexworld, and every era after, those born in the Ashlands are touched by the star’s magic. This is known as the King’s Blood, which connects all Ashen. Each member of this species, even those completely untrained, are gifted in a handful of ways. Though the specifics of this cover a range of possibilities, they are grouped into what are known as the 9 Sacred Titles: Onbeso, Kintu, Mwana, Kuhani, Aboral, Voerde, Oshosi, Ubea and Yashe

A Greater Purpose

Thanks to their natural gifts, Ashen rarely need to wonder or decide what kind of magic they wish to use or study. Those who live in the culture of the Ashlands are guided through a system that allows them to use their powers to the best of their abilities, and for the glory of the Ashlands. Those born with radiant magic become clerics, or paladins. Those with an affinity for nature can work to become powerful Druids. The way their magic takes form is not a choice; it is a predetermined truth.

Cycle of Life & Death

As the Star remains upon the Hexworld, it keeps a direct link not only to the bodies of the Ashen, but their souls as well. Reincarnation is more than a spell to the Ashen; it is a promise, a way of life. With the King’s Blood flowing through their body, helping to shape their very being, they can be returned to their homeland through the Waters of the Ashlands. This not only gives them a knack for returning to life, but a special cultural relationship with death.

Power That Shines Through

With their infused, innate magical abilities and human-like form, there appearance of an Ashen will have features that can be easily identified. The Ashen Features table has examples you can choose or use as inspiration to create your own.

God of the Ashen

Though there are some well travelled Ashen who have devoted themselves to other gods, most Ashen believe in one deity; the King Ibere. Their stories tell of a great fire which cleansed their land and gifted it, and their people, with great magic that all things are connected to. From the smallest insect, to the largest mammal, and everything in between; all are connected by this magic. It is a concept known as Ashay, that all things are made up of the same thing, and thus deserve the same respect. This is why regardless of Sacred Title, each Ashen should be regarded with love, respect, and greeted with an open heart.

Sacred Titles

Ashen are born with specialized magic in their blood, that guides the way that they use magic for the rest of their lives. These specializations are represented by 9 Sacred  Titles. Just as your Class choice dictates your spellcasting type, so too does your Sacred Title.

Your Sacred Title should match the Spellcasting Ability your Class uses, if any. Each Title has a suggested class, though you can work with your GM to choose the one that best represents your Class. Choose one :

Onbeso (Fighter): Non-spellcasting Classes with low magic abilities
Kintu (Sorcerer): Charisma Based Spellcasting with innate magic abilities
Mwana (Wizard): Intelligence Based Spellcasting who learn magic through study
Kuhani (Cleric): Wisdom Based Spellcasting with divine life magic
Aboral (Paladin): Charisma Based Spellcasting with oath-bound magic abilities
Voerde (Bard) Charisma Based Spellcasting weaving magic through words and music
Oshosi (Druid) Wisdom Based Spellcasting who embody nature itself
Ubea (Ranger) Wisdom Based Spellcasting who can tap into nature's magic
Yashe (Warlock): Charisma Based Spellcasting granted magic from an outside source

Choosing Onbeso grants you an additional Origin Feature.

Ancestral Dice

When you choose this species during character creation, you gain an ability that is fueled by special dice called ancestral dice.

Ancestral Dice: You have three ancestral dice, which are of the same value as your Hit Dice. An ancestral dice is expended when you use it. You regain all uses of your ancestral dice when you finish a long rest. You gain another ancestral die at 7th level and one more at 15th level.

Ashen Gift: You unlock one Ashen Gift, determined by your subspecies. You must expend ancestral dice to use your Ashen Gift. These are described in the Species Traits section of your character sheet. Each subspecies has one unique Ashen Gift.

Alternative: At your GMs discretion, you may also attempt to expend any number of your Ancestral Dice and use them as additional Hit Dice on a short rest.

Multiclassing: If you are multiclassing, your Ancestral Dice are only the same value as the Hit Dice you gain at 1st level.
