Homebrew Chiropterii Species Details

Chiropterii are a mysterious race of batfolk who soar through the night on silent wings. With large, leathery appendages and sharp senses, they dominate the nocturnal world. Their eyes gleam in the darkness, and their ears twitch at the slightest noise, able to detect even the faintest whisper from across a cavern.

Chiropterii live in tight-knit matriarchal clans in high caves, forgotten ruins, and deep forests, often shunning daylight and those who walk in it. Their society values personal strength, cunning, and the bonds of family, though some venture into the world as mercenaries, scouts, or seekers of lost lore.

To meet a Chiropterii is to encounter the living embodiment of twilight—neither light nor shadow, but the perfect balance between.

Physically, they are tall and lithe, with clawed feet and hands, fanged mouths, and wings that fold like cloaks when at rest. Their voices can be melodic or raspy, echoing the varied calls of bats. Though some are seen as eerie or even vampiric, Chiropterii are no more inherently dark than any other folk—just more comfortable when the sun isn’t shining.

Chiropterii Traits

Chiropterii share a set of traits born of their nocturnal nature, flight, and keen senses. All Chiropterii have enhanced darkvision and the ability to fly, alongside other features that set them apart as masters of the night.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and you can choose to increase either your Wisdom or Charisma score by 1

Darkvision

Accustomed to darkness, you have superior darkvision. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Echolocation

You have blindsight out to 30 feet, thanks to your echolocation. You are deafened while in an area of silence, and you cannot use your blindsight if you are deafened or incapacitated.

Silent Wings

Your wings make little to no sound as you move. While flying, you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to move silently.

Flight

You have a flying speed of 30 feet. You cannot fly while wearing medium or heavy armor.

Sunlight Sensitivity

You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, your target, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.

 

Chiropterii loathe the burning light of day and often wear cloaks or shaded goggles to cope.

Nocturnal Adaptation

Your nocturnal nature makes you naturally stealthy. You have proficiency in the Stealth skill.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Chiropteric, a guttural language of clicks, screeches, and hisses, which bounces easily off stone walls and echoes through the night.
