Homebrew Dewspawn (2024) Species Details

Born from the bizarre machinations of an eccentric Beholder named Xargulath, Dewspawn are living oozes infused with an effervescent energy that fizzes through their translucent, neon-green forms. Originally an experiment to create the ultimate minion, Xargulath’s attempts at sentient oozes backfired—creating creatures too hyperactive and free-spirited to obey its will. Now, Dewspawn roam the world in search of thrills, adventure, and the perfect snack.

Dewspawn are semi-transparent and constantly shifting, with bubbling pockets of fizz rising through their gelatinous bodies. Their colors range from neon green to citrus yellow, sometimes glowing faintly in the dark. Their forms are amorphous, allowing them to shift between humanoid shapes or blobs at will. The scent of artificial citrus lingers around them.

Dewspawn are high-energy, enthusiastic, and eternally curious. They rarely settle down, preferring to explore the world in a constant state of excitement. Many become adventurers purely for the thrill, treating life as one big, high-octane ride. Some sages speculate that their bodies will eventually fizzle out over the years, but so far, no Dewspawn has ever lived long enough to confirm it—perhaps because they tend to throw themselves into danger at every opportunity.

Their names are often inspired by sounds, excitement, or the few words they remember from their Beholder creator’s mutterings. Common names include Zzzt, Bubb, Gloop, Rush, Pk’Skshhh, and Xargulath Jr. (many of them claim to be Xargulath’s true heir).

As a dewspawn, you have the following species traits.

You are an Ooze.

Size.

You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you select this species.

Speed.

Your walking speed is 30 feet.

Amorphous.

You can squeeze through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide, provided you are wearing and carrying nothing.

Darkvision.

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Caffeine Rush.

When rolling initiative, you can roll a d4 and add the result to your initiative roll.

Extreme Metabolism.

You have resistance to poison damage, and you can consume almost anything organic or sugary as sustenance. You don’t need to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a puddle-like meditation, during which you remain conscious.

Shape Self.

As an action, you can reshape your body to give yourself a head, one or two arms, one or two legs, and makeshift hands and feet, or you can revert to a limbless blob. While you have a humanlike shape, you can wear clothing and armor made for a Humanoid of your size.
