Homebrew Aos Sidhe Species Details

Just like the Feywild, aos sidhe are a mysterious, wild people.

Aos sidhe come in all shapes, and sizes. Some aos sidhe have antennae, and others have compound eyes like dragonflies. That said, all aos sidhe share two common traits. Aos sidhe have thin, insect wings and an ability to shrink themselves to minuscule size.

Aos sidhe children mature at the same rate as humans, but then they age much more slowly. Aos Sidhe can live for up to 150 years.

The aos sidhe' homeland is the Feywild, but their exact origin story varies depending on who you ask. Nobody knows for sure.

Aos sidhe societies are typically tribal and/or nomadic, consisting of small, closely-knit family groups who share traditions and a common dialect.

Some of the most famous and revered of the Aos sidhe tribes are those of the Brownies. These laid-back, friendly aos sidhe communities wander the land, living within the homes of other folks temporarily before resuming their travels. Although they are technically imposing themselves in the homes of others, brownies are almost always welcome. For, brownies are diligent, polite guests who work tirelessly to clean, repair, and protect their host's home for the duration of their stay. In fact, brownies often leave their host's home far better than when they found it. Thus, it is seen as a sign of great luck if a group of brownies decides to stay in your home.

Some exceptions to the typical sprite society exist as well. In hidden corners of the Feywild, legend tells of mighty, isolationist city-states of aos sidhe with hundreds of thousands of inhabitants. These are the homes of the Tuatha, a proud people with a strong martial culture. Tuatha social structure closely resembles that of a hive. For instance, Tuatha societies adhere to a strict chain of command from the Matriarch (AKA the Queen) down to the workers and soldiers. From the moment Tuatha children can walk and speak, they begin their training in the martial arts and strategic thinking. Once these children begin to show talent in one field over the others, Tuatha tailor the children's education to nurture that talent so they can assume the role best suited to their individual strengths. Tuatha societies are not expansionist or imperialistic. They prefer to keep to themselves and live peaceful, solitary lives. However, any threats made to their society are met with swift, coordinated, and lethal retaliation.

You are a Fey.

Size

You are Medium (about 4-6 feet tall).

Ability Score Increases

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase your dexterity score by 2

Speed

Your speed is 30 ft. So long as you are not wearing medium or heavy armour, you also have a fly speed of 30ft, thanks to your insect wings.

Languages

Your character knows three languages: Common, Sylvan, and one other language of your choice. Knowledge of a language means your character can communicate in it, read it, and write it.

Mirthful Miniaturization

Your lineage traces back to the first archfey. Consequently, you have inherited an innate magical ability to shrink yourself to minuscule size.

As a bonus action, you can transmute yourself to shrink to tiny size. Your inventory, armor, and gear also shrink to match your new size. Your ability scores (i.e., strength) remain the same while you are in this form, despite your smaller size.

While in this smaller form, you gain the following benefits:

• you can squeeze through a space as narrow as one inch wide
• you have advantage on ability checks to escape a grapple
• you have advantage on (dexterity) stealth checks (if the armour you are wearing normally imposes disadvantage on stealth checks, the advantage and disadvantage cancel each other, as normal)

You can stay in this miniature size for up to a number of hours equal to your character level, or until you gain the incapacitated or unconscious conditions, or die. You can also dismiss this form early and return to your normal size as a bonus action.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your character level. You regain all expended uses of this feature when you finish a long rest.

 

Fey Lineage

The aos sidhe come from a variety of fey lineages, each with their own culture and teachings. For instance, you may have roots in one of the many nomadic tribes of aos sidhe, or you might be from the the friendly brownie families or a former soldier of a Tuatha troop.

Your unique lineage and upbringing has gifted you with certain skills and aptitudes. Choose a lineage from the fey lineages table. You gain the benefits of the chosen lineage.
