Homebrew Aelarin Species Details

Physical Description

Aelarin are striking extraplanar humanoids with strong avian influences. Their bodies are covered in soft, downy feathers that blend into majestic, fully functional wings sprouting

Racial Traits

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age. Aelarin mature at the same rate as humans but live much longer, often reaching 500 to 600 years of age. They retain a youthful appearance well into old age, often appearing ageless until near death.

Alignment. Aelarin value freedom, expression, and personal journeys. Most tend toward Chaotic Good, though Neutral alignments are common among loners and scholars.

Size. Aelarin are about the size of tall humans, ranging from 5 to 6.5 feet tall. Their long wings and proud postures make them seem larger than they are. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet

Feathered Grace

You have proficiency in the Acrobatics skill. Your natural sense of aerial movement and balance gives you fluidity in motion, both in the air and on the ground.

Skyborn Wings

You have a pair of powerful, feathered wings that grant you the ability to fly.

  • You have a flying speed of 30 feet.

  • You cannot use this flying speed if you are wearing medium or heavy armor, or if your wings are restrained.

  • Your wings are considered natural weapons for the purposes of grapples, shoves, and spell targeting.

Note for DMs: This flight option is balanced for level 1 play by keeping it conditional (armor-restricted) and matching the Aarakocra's established baseline.

Feathered Resilience

Your feathers are more than decorative; they carry a hint of extraplanar magic.

  • You have resistance to falling damage, as your wings instinctively break your fall.

  • You can cast the feather fall spell once per long rest without requiring components. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this trait.

Cloud-Dweller’s Vitality

Accustomed to high altitudes and planar climates, your body is remarkably adaptive.

  • You can breathe normally in thin air and high altitudes.

  • You are also resistant to extreme cold, such as wind chill or high-elevation exposure (though not magical cold damage).

Otherworldly Presence

Your extraplanar nature grants you subtle divine presence. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened by celestials, fiends, and fey.

Hollow-Boned Grace

Your avian anatomy is refined, light, and agile—but more delicate than most. You have mastered movement through air and space, but must be cautious of harsh impacts.

You gain the following benefits:

  • Featherlight Descent. When you are not wearing armor or carrying more than half your carrying capacity, your flying speed increases by +10 feet, and you can hover in place for up to 1 round as part of a movement once per turn.

  • Delicate Frame. You have disadvantage on saving throws and ability checks made to resist being shoved, grappled, or knocked prone. In addition, when you take bludgeoning damage from a fall, forceful impact, or constriction, you take an additional +2 damage.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Auran, and Celestial.

Aelarin Traits

Aelarin are beings of the breeze—extraplanar humanoids with the grace of birds and the soul of wanderers. Their slender, feathered forms are crowned with vast wings, and their airy presence speaks of distant skies and dreamlike heights. Infused with divine wind and planar magic, Aelarin possess natural flight, subtle elemental power, and a resilience born of life among the clouds. Whether gliding through storm-swept peaks or dancing above city rooftops, they embody the freedom of the open sky and the light touch of Zephariel’s blessing.
