Homebrew Dark Sun, Elf (2024) Species Details

The elves of Athas are long-limbed sprinters who lead lives of thievery, raiding, trading, and warfare. They stand between 6,5 and 7,5 feet tall, with slender yet muscular builds. They have
deeply etched features, with skin that has been made rugged by the baking sun and the scouring sand. The color of their skin is as varied as that of the other races of Athas, and as affected by the rays of the sun. They grow no facial hair, but the locks atop their heads come in shades of lightest blond to darkest black. They dress in garb designed to protect them from the desert and the elements.

Elves are tireless wanderers forged in the endless desert-burned dark by the sun, toughened by the swirling sand, and given strength and speed by the constant wind. There’s no racial unity among them. Within a given tribe, all elves are brethren, but outsiders-even other elves -are regarded as potential enemies. Outsiders can be accepted and perhaps even become friends, but trust takes time to develop and is often associated with tests and great sacrifice

Note: Athas is a cruel and harsh world. As a result the species inhabiting it are more sturdy than the average Dungeons and Dragons species, despite 2024 having removed Ability Score Adjustments on the species section, Athasian species still are more sturdy and as such they receive adjustments to reflect this. The adjustments made have taken into account that an Athasian Character will take a background that will give them additional Adjustments during character creation and said characters will receive them normally as part of the Character Creation Process.

Athasian Elf Traits

Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 6,5–7,5 feet tall)
Speed: 40 feet
Age: Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, they must pass the tribe's rites of initiation, before they can be considered adults. An elf typically claims adulthood around the age of 20 and can live to be 140 years old.
Alignment:  Elves value freedom, variety, and independence, so they lean strongly toward chaos.

As an Athasian Elf, you have these special traits.

Ability Score Increases

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase Dexterity and Intelligence by 1. None of these increases can raise a score above 20.

Elf Weapon Proficiency

You have proficient with the weapons of your people. The longsword and the longbow, regardless of class.

Elf Darkvision

You have Darkvision up to 60'

Elf Resistance

Elves have a natural resistance to extreme temperatures and aren’t adversely affected by the heat of the day or the chill of the night. However, this resistance doesn’t extend to magical or supernatural heat and cold. You have advantage on saving throws to avoid Exhaustion due to natural heat or cold.

Elf Run

The elf run is a state of mind that causes adrenaline to flow, inhibiting the tiring nature of the elf’s weaker Constitution. When the elf run flows through an elf, he can run as many as 50 miles in a single day and keep up the grueling pace for a maximum of seven days in a row before fatigue sets in. To engage in the elf run, an elf adds his Constitution score to his base movement rate for overland travel in a fast pace (which is 30 miles) to determine the distance he can cover in miles per day. Thus, an elf with a Constitution Score of 14, has an overland travel rate of 44 miles per day at a fast pace while engagins in an Elf Run for a period up to seven days (see below) uninterupted travel without penalty. The elf character does not partake in Long Rests during this time, it is constantly on the move, they can take Short Rests normally and can engage in combat if needed.

An elf can induce an Elf Run with a successful Constitution Saving Throw of a DC of 10. The Saving Throw result also determines how many days the elf run lasts until fatigue sets in, for every increment of 2 above the result the elf runs for an extra day, thus if the saving throw result is a 15 the Elf character can run for a total of 3 days. Once fatigue sets in, the elf suffers an Exhaustion Level for each day they engage in the Elf Run beyond the predetermined limit, this type of Exhaustion does not affect speed for Elf characters.

Elf Survival

An elf character gains a surprise bonus when in the desert or steppes of Athas. You have proficiency with Stealth  and an advantage Stealth checks while on desert plains or steppes.

Languages

You can speak Common and Elvish. Short, clipped words make up Elvish. It is spoken in a rapid staccato pace that is difficult for novices to pick up.
Keep in mind that unless otherwise stated by a class feature or background all characters of Athasian descent are illiterate.
