Homebrew Changeling (Olvara) Species Details
Changelings are rare and enigmatic beings, found almost exclusively in the subterranean city called the Thousand Halls; a vast, glimmering metropolis built deep beneath the surface. Within its shifting halls and echoing amphitheaters, changelings study lore, language, and illusion. Their society values memory, mimicry, and meaning, encouraging every individual to learn not just who they are, but who they could be. While secretive by nature, changelings who wander the world often do so to gather stories, perform arts, or explore other lives—many become bards, spies, or lorekeepers. They are driven not by deception, but by the joy of possibility.
Changeling (Olvara) Traits
As a changeling, you have the following racial traits.Creature Type
You are a Fey.
Size
You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you select this race.
Speed
Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Fluid Identity
Once per short rest, you may gain advantage on a Charisma (Deception), (Performance), or (Persuasion) check when acting in character as one of your alternate personas or impersonating another individual.
Assume Form
You can change your hair, facial features, skin tone, height, weight, sex, and build. You can appear as any Medium or Small humanoid you've seen, matching their basic look, voice, and general anatomy. Your clothing, gear, and statistics do not change. This transformation lasts until you choose to end it or use this trait again. This ability cannot replicate creatures with significantly different anatomy (e.g., centaurs, winged beings, etc.) unless otherwise allowed by the DM.
Living Mask
You may create up to three distinct identities, complete with voice, demeanor, style, and backstory. Over time, these “masks” may develop reputations of their own. In cities or social situations, they may be known by name, sought out, or feared. These identities can persist even while you are not in disguise, forming a layered web of connections.
Shifting Flesh
You can now take on the form of non-humanoid creatures. As an action, you may transform into any Small or Medium creature (aberration, beast, celestial, fey, fiend, humanoid, monstrosity or undead) you have studied or seen. You do not gain the creature’s stats, traits, or abilities—only its appearance, voice, movement type (e.g. swim speed), and natural weapons if they make sense (DM’s discretion). This transformation lasts for up to 1 hour. You can use this feature once per short rest.
Mimic Matter
You gain the ability to transform into inanimate objects. As an action, you can transform into any Large or smaller non-magical object you've seen or touched. You retain awareness but cannot move or act unless you return to your true form (no action required). You appear entirely mundane unless magically scrutinized (e.g., Detect Magic won't reveal you). You can stay in this form for up to 10 minutes. Once per short rest.
True Self Unbound
You may fully become another being. Once per long rest, you can transform into any creature you’ve studied or observed, of any type or appearance, as long as it is not Gargantuan or larger. This transformation lasts up to 1 hour and includes:
- Full physical form, movement types, and natural weapons.
- Resistance or immunity traits are not granted unless cosmetic.
- You do not gain spellcasting, lair actions, legendary actions, or recharge abilities.
This is a magical transformation, not an illusion. Only True Seeing or a Wish spell can pierce or undo it early.
