Homebrew Wild-Folk Species Details

An old race that once stalked savannas and woods in a distant land, the wild-folk have survived to the present as an adventurous people with a thriving warrior culture. These beastly humanoids are famed for their stealth as well as for their ferocity, being able to go on the hunt and strike with no warning. In ancient times they lived in seasonal camps, migrating around their large home ranges and gathering food for the Winter; in modernity their scavenging and foraging has become trading, with their warriors traveling away to conquer new lands and find new goods.

Though their raids are famed for swiftness and stealth, the wild-folk are ordinarily a boisterous and gregarious people, sometimes edging into being a bit forceful. Wild-folk are proud but still willing to make allies, welcoming those who don't shun their beastly features and who prove themselves strong. While their tactics and form may not make them many friends in urban environments, having a wild-folk friend in the wilderness can make for a wild adventure few could dream of.

Size

Wild-folk stand at around 5'8"-6'4" tall, and their weight is in the range of 145-215 lbs.

Appearance

Wild-folk have a humanoid silhouette, but many animalic features: they have a rhinarium(or wet nose) and whiskers, horizontal pupils and irises that are golden, green, brown, or amber in color, and their ears are slightly offset with one a bit higher than the other; they have a short and dense coat of fur that is a sandy brown overall and a lighter cream on their stomachs; they have retractable claws on their five-fingered hands and four-toed feet, and a dewclaw on their feet; they have dark eyebrows and a long mane of hair on their heads, typically a shade of brown, black, blond, and occasionally red. Males tend towards being taller and heavier than their females, and they grow a goatee; the hips of females are a bit wider, and their ears a bit bigger. There are internal differences between humans as well, such as carnassial teeth and a simpler digestive system.

Age

Aging faster than humans, the wild-folk reach maturity at just 13 years, and can live for eighty or more years, though most wild-folk are considered elderly at about 60.

Alignment

The wild-folk are broadly neutral in their alignment, avoiding moral complications and following the rhythm and balance of nature, though their dispensation for adventure may lead some of them into more Chaotic alignments- though, in more urban environments, wild-folk of any stripe can be found.

Language

The wild-folk speak Karjigbo, an agglutinative language with an extensive noun-class system, and a few nasalized vowels and consonants not found in Common. The grammar is complex, in part due to the diversity of the regional dialects, but in modernity the core of the Karjigbo language and grammar has become standardized and overall easier to pick up. It has a rich history of song with the wild-folk, and can have a musical lilt when spoken.

Names

Wild-folk will typically only use a given name in their day-to-day life. Their societies do have clan names, coming from the patriarch(and very rarely matriarch) of the clan, but these are chiefly used for inter-clan communication and formal rites and proceedings. In situations where there are multiple people with the same name, a trade name(shepherd, cooper, smith, etc) or an honor name(swift, strongclaw, dragonslayer, etc) based on a feat is used in conjunction with the given name. Some examples of masculine given names are: Ebiji, Malai, N'Kale, Ube, Ma'ike; some examples of feminine names are: Ipuru, Maraku, Puttimihe, Sudida, Nattanda.
