Homebrew VULREN Species Details

VULREN

Nomadic Fox-Folk

Creature Type: Humanoid

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Vulren are anthropomorphic foxes with lithe, agile bodies built for speed and stealth. Their fur ranges through various natural tones including vibrant red, silver-gray, pure white, and deep black, often with distinctive markings around their facial features. Their keen eyes—typically amber or emerald—allow them to see clearly even in dim light. Vulren possess sharp, retractable claws and fox-like ears that pivot independently to detect sounds from multiple directions.

SOCIETY AND CULTURE

Vulren society revolves around nomadic clan structures, with each clan consisting of several interrelated family groups. These tight-knit communities follow seasonal migration routes, establishing temporary settlements that leave minimal impact on the land.

Vulren place high value on survival skills, honorable conduct, and fair trade. While respected for their diplomatic abilities, they are often regarded with a mixture of admiration and suspicion by settled peoples who find their cunning and adaptability unsettling.

Most clans follow spiritual practices centered on natural cycles and ancestral guidance. Elders serve as both keepers of oral traditions and judges in matters of clan dispute.

TRAITS AND ABILITIES

Fleet of Foot. Vulren base walking speed is 35 feet.

Keen Senses. You have proficiency in the Perception skill. Additionally, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Fox's Claws. Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Darkvision. Accustomed to twilight hunting and nocturnal activities, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Vulpine Agility. Your reflexes and agility allow you to move with a burst of speed. When you move on your turn in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the turn. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you move 0 feet on one of your turns.

Burrow Instinct. As an action, you can quickly dig a temporary shelter or hiding spot in loose soil, sand, or snow. This creates a space large enough for you to hide in, providing three-quarters cover. You can maintain this burrow for up to 1 hour before it collapses. Once you use this ability, you cannot use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Cunning Reflexes. When a creature you can see attacks you, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll. If the attack misses, you can move up to half your speed without provoking opportunity attacks. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

ROLEPLAYING A VULREN

When playing a Vulren character, consider the following characteristics:

  • A deep respect for nature and survival knowledge
  • Strong loyalty to clan and family bonds
  • Natural curiosity about new places and customs
  • A tendency to assess situations for advantages and escape routes
  • Discomfort with prolonged stays in one location
  • A balance of playfulness and pragmatism

"Trust is earned through actions, not promised through words. The Vulren remember both kindness and treachery through generations." —Silvertail, Vulren Clan Elder
