Homebrew Aboleth Species Details
Before the coming of the gods, aboleths lurked in primordial oceans and underground lakes. They reached out with their minds and seized control of the burgeoning life-forms of the mortal realm, making those creatures their slaves. Their dominance made them like gods. Then the true gods appeared, smashing the aboleths' empire and freeing their slaves. Aboleths have never forgotten.
You are what is informally known as an aboleth "runt". Your powers of enslavement and other abilities (as well as your body) are not fully developed, and so you are weaker than a 'true' aboleth. However, you still believe yourself to be just as powerful as these weak mortals you have chosen to associate and travel with.
Aboleth Traits
Creature Type: Aberration
Size: Medium
Speed: 10 feet, swim 40 feet.
Amphibious
You can breathe air and water.
Telepathy
You have telepathy out to a range of 30 feet.
Enslave
As an action, you can target any CR 1 or lower Tiny creature, and if it fails a Wisdom saving throw (DC is 8 + your Wisdom modifier + your proficiency bonus) then it becomes your familiar, as if you had cast the Find Familiar spell. This ignores the normal limitations on a familiar’s form, but if you cast Find Familiar then you can still only choose the familiar forms normally available for that spell. You can only ever have one familiar. Once a creature has become your familiar because of this ability, it cannot stop being your familiar unless you release it from service (no action required).
