Homebrew Aboleth Species Details

Before the coming of the gods, aboleths lurked in primordial oceans and underground lakes. They reached out with their minds and seized control of the burgeoning life-forms of the mortal realm, making those creatures their slaves. Their dominance made them like gods. Then the true gods appeared, smashing the aboleths' empire and freeing their slaves. Aboleths have never forgotten.

However, you are not a normal aboleth. You are what is informally known as an aboleth "runt"; you are not fully developed, and are thus weaker than 'true' aboleths are.

Of course, though, you are still plenty mighty enough to travel with these weak mortals, and face the challenges they fear.

Aboleth Traits

Amphibious, Telepathy, Enslave (Turn a low-CR Tiny creature into your familiar)

Aboleth Traits

As an aboleth 'runt', you possess the following traits, inherent to your nature:

Size

Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 10 feet, and you also have a swimming speed of 40 feet.

Amphibious

You can breathe air and water.

Telepathy

You have the ability to telepathically send and receive messages out to a range of 30 feet. You cannot do this in any area which prevents the use of magical abilities.

Enslave

As an action, you can target any CR 1 or lower Tiny creature within 30 feet, and if it fails a Wisdom saving throw (DC is 8 + your Wisdom modifier + your proficiency bonus) then it becomes your familiar, as if you had cast the Find Familiar spell. This ignores the normal limitations on a familiar’s form, but if you cast Find Familiar then you can still only choose the familiar forms normally available for that spell. You can only ever have one familiar. Once a creature has become your familiar because of this ability, it cannot stop being your familiar unless you release it from service (no action required).
