Homebrew Displacer Beast (Anthropomorphic) Species Details

Displacer Beast (Anthropomorphic)

Displacer Beasts are mysterious, panther-like creatures with six limbs and magical displacement abilities. Rarely, one of these creatures manifests humanoid intelligence and a bipedal, anthropomorphic form. These beings combine the raw power and grace of their kind with the cunning and adaptability of mortal races. Whether born from magical experimentation, ancient pacts, or extraplanar origins, anthropomorphic Displacer Beasts often walk a path shadowed by fear, misunderstanding, or awe.

History and Society

Anthropomorphic Displacer Beasts are exceedingly rare, often regarded as legends or omens by those who encounter them. Their origins are steeped in mystery—some are said to be the result of arcane experiments by mad wizards seeking to blend monstrosity with sapience, while others claim descent from ancient fey courts or infernal contracts where the natural form of the displacer beast was uplifted in exchange for servitude or power. In some obscure planar traditions, they are viewed as the mortal offspring of chaos and shadow, walking anomalies meant to test the boundaries of nature and perception.

Because of their rarity, no known homeland or civilization belongs to anthropomorphic Displacer Beasts. Most grow up in isolation, either shunned by mortals who mistake them for monsters or abandoned by their own monstrous kin, who see their intelligence and humanoid shape as a curse or weakness. This isolation often breeds a strong sense of independence—or, in some, bitterness. Still, others manage to integrate into larger societies, carving out roles as mercenaries, assassins, wandering sages, or shadowy guardians.

When they do gather in small numbers—typically no more than a handful—they form tightly bonded groups built on mutual trust, secrecy, and shared survival. These micro-societies may adhere to strict codes of honor or pragmatism, and often revolve around survival, secrecy, and manipulation of perception—mirroring the displacement abilities that define their species.

Revered or reviled, anthropomorphic Displacer Beasts leave a lasting impression. They are often misunderstood, feared for their alien presence and eerie grace, but those who look past their monstrous exterior may find complex individuals driven by longing, intellect, and a will to shape their own identity beyond the shadow they were born into.

Life Span

Displacer Beasts mature at a rate similar to humans but can live up to 150 years. Their magical nature slows their aging after early adulthood.

Height and Weight

Displacer Beasts typically stand between 6 and 8 feet tall, weighing between 200 and 350 pounds, depending on muscle mass and build. They are tall, lean, and powerfully built, with digitigrade legs and sleek fur.

Displacer Beast (Anthropomorphic) Traits

As a Displacer Beast, you have the following racial traits.

Creature Type

Your creature type is Monstrosity. Some spells and effects that target Humanoids will not affect you, and vice versa.

Size

You are Medium

Speed

Your walking speed is 40 feet, and you have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed.

Darkvision

Accustomed to the shadowy depths of forests and caves, your vision pierces darkness. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Four-Armed

You possess four fully functional arms, allowing you to perform feats of agility and multitasking beyond most other creatures.

You can wield one additional light weapon when engaging in two-weapon fighting (three weapons total).

You can interact with one additional object on your turn (such as opening a door or drawing a weapon).

You have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks made to climb.

Optional Rule (at DM's discretion):
If you are wielding at least three light melee weapons and not using a shield, you may make one additional light weapon attack as part of your bonus action each turn.

Tentacle Lash

You are proficient with these tentacles, which you can use to make melee weapon attacks. On a hit, they deal 1d6 + your Strength modifier in bludgeoning or slashing damage (your choice). These weapons are considered magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks.

Displacement Field

As a bonus action, you can activate your displacement field. Until the start of your next turn, attack rolls against you have disadvantage. This effect ends early if you are incapacitated or if your speed becomes 0.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses after a long rest.

Shadow Step

While in dim light or darkness, you can use a bonus action to teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is also in dim light or darkness.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.
