Homebrew Changelatch Species Details

Born from the shapeshifting creatures known as mimics, the Changelatch are an eerie yet curious race that straddles the line between monstrosity and sentience. While their ancestors lurked in dungeons and disguised themselves as treasure chests, these evolved mimics have developed intelligence, individuality, and the ability to integrate—if awkwardly—into broader society.

In their natural form, a Changelatch resembles a slick, semi-solid mass of iridescent goo, scattered with twitching eyes and jagged, toothy ridges. However, most have learned to take humanoid forms, though these are rarely perfect: their transformations are uncanny, often off in subtle but disturbing ways—too-smooth skin, jointless fingers, mouths that stretch too wide when smiling.

Driven by an insatiable sense of mimicry, Changelatch often adopt personalities, roles, and appearances they observe in others, sometimes forgetting their own original identity. While some see them as unnerving imposters, others recognize their innate adaptability, loyalty, and unique talents in infiltration, artistry, and combat.

Changelatch Traits

ShapeShift

Aberrant Origin

  • Acid Resilience: Your body is naturally resistant to corrosive substances. You have resistance to acid damage.

Shapeshift

As an action, you can reshape your body to assume the appearance of a Medium or Small creature or object that you have seen within the last week. This transformation is purely physical and cosmetic—it does not grant the abilities, traits, or knowledge of the creature or object you mimic. However, your replication is uncannily accurate, often passing casual inspection unless closely scrutinized.

Mimic Memory

  • Voice Imitation: You can use this trait to imitate a specific creature’s voice. A creature that hears the imitation can make a Wisdom (Insight) check contested by your Charisma (Deception) check to determine the authenticity. If you have spent at least 10 minutes listening to the target speak or if the imitation is brief and casual (like shouting for help or giving a simple order), you have advantage on the Deception check.
