Homebrew Datrean Species Details
Fire-born draconic humanoids descended from soul-pacted dragons and humans. Immune to fire but vulnerable to cold, Datreans manifest partial dragon traits and erupt into volatile flame when threatened. Divided into Wyverns, Drakes, and Dragons, they navigate a legacy of power, isolation, and survival in the sun-scorched desert of Memoria.
Dragon Datreans — The Apex Predators
Behavior & Personality:
Dragon Datreans embody the regal, prideful, and often domineering nature of classic high-fantasy dragons. They see themselves as apex beings — born rulers, tacticians, and warriors. Their personalities lean toward intense confidence, territorial dominance, and raw charisma, often commanding attention or obedience in any social space. Their bestial influences resemble that of a lion — bold, aggressive when challenged, and protective over what they consider theirs. They may growl softly when threatened, stare down enemies without blinking, and hold grudges with the memory of a warlord.
Social Structure:
Dragon Datreans value hierarchy and status, often testing others for strength or resolve. They may challenge others physically or psychologically, but respect those who push back with equal force.
Wyvern Datreans — The Agile Instinctual
Behavior & Personality:
Wyvern Datreans blend draconic aggression with the speed and sensitivity of feline creatures. They’re reactive, emotionally driven, and expressive in their body language — much like a big cat. They may purr when comfortable, growl or hiss when annoyed, and are known for their sharp reflexes, curiosity, and playfully destructive tendencies. Unlike Dragon Datreans, they’re less concerned with dominance and more attuned to emotional or environmental shifts, making them highly adaptive but unpredictable.
Social Structure:
Wyverns can be fiercely independent but bond intensely with individuals they trust. They're extremely loyal once that bond is formed — but also prone to jealousy, impulsiveness, or restlessness if isolated too long.
Drake Datreans — The Enduring Behemoths
Behavior & Personality:
Drake Datreans echo the behavior of Komodo dragons: deliberate, primal, and focused. Their movements are slow until they strike — and when they do, it’s with overwhelming force. They are quietly territorial, calculated, and possess a cold patience that can feel unnerving. Unlike the passionate flare of Wyverns or the commanding fire of Dragons, Drakes are stoic, obsessive, and highly resistant to fear or pain. They rarely speak unless necessary and tend to communicate through body posture or low, guttural vocalizations.
Social Structure:
Drakes are often solitary by nature, and while they can operate in groups, they don’t seek approval or connection the way Wyverns do. They value strength, endurance, and reliability, and tend to distrust the emotionally reactive or flighty.
Datrean Traits – Physiology and Identity
The Datreans are a humanoid draconic race marked by their deep connection to fire and heat. While their appearances vary across castes—Dragon, Drake, and Wyvern—all Datreans share a set of core traits that distinguish them from humans:
- Fire Affinity: Datreans are completely immune to heat, flames, lava, and combustion. Their bodies thrive in high temperatures, and they often use geothermal springs and molten caves as resting places. Exposure to cold, however, is fatal—even a chill desert night can be deadly without internal heat regulation.
- Heat-Based Physiology: They generate internal heat constantly, often visible as a warmth in their breath, skin, or eyes. When sick or out of balance, their bodies may reject excess flame as a volatile substance (called Scorch Resin, Ember Bile, etc.), expelled like elemental vomit.
- Partial Transformation: Some Datreans can selectively shift parts of their bodies into draconic forms—claws, tails, wings, and other appendages—particularly the Wyvern variant. Full transformations into beast forms are possible but dangerous; staying too long risks losing one’s mind and becoming feral.
- Distinct Features: Traits often include:
- Horns (varying in number, shape, and texture; sometimes furred)
- Slitted or unusually colored eyes (Jane’s, for instance, have white pupils)
- Long or segmented tails
- Double-tipped, pointed ears
- Naturally tanned or heat-resistant skin tones (e.g., olive, stone-brown, charcoal)
- No scales, but often warm to the touch
- Long Lifespans: Datreans live for centuries under ideal conditions, though many perish young due to war, cold, or internal collapse. They mature mentally and physically faster than humans in their youth, but slow dramatically afterward.
- Cultural Memory: Fire is tied not only to their biology, but to their ancestral identity. Many can access fragments of ancestral memories or instincts when emotionally or spiritually charged—especially near heat sources or flame altars.
- Social Caste Alignment: Physical form subtly influences social status. Dragon-variant Datreans tend to have grander horns, larger stature, and broader fire control. Drakes are physically powerful, stockier, and more grounded. Wyverns are smaller, agile, and winged, often undervalued despite their utility.

Datrean
Base Traits (shared across all Datreans):
- Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2.
- Age. Datreans mature quickly and live up to 120 years.
- Alignment. Most Datreans tend toward chaotic alignments, following personal codes of honor.
- Size. Your size is Medium.
- Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
- Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and either Draconic or Primordial.
- Heat Immunity. You are immune to fire damage.
- Cold Vulnerability. You have vulnerability to cold damage.
- Dragonflame Soul. You can unleash a 15-foot cone of fire as an action. Each creature must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus), taking 2d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th, and 5d6 at 16th. You regain the ability to use this trait after a short or long rest.
- Kindled Identity. You gain proficiency in your choice of Insight or Intimidation.
Dragon Variant (Subrace)
Dragon Datreans are the most regal and arcane of their kind — descendants of true dragons who sacrificed full draconic form in exchange for sentience and magical control. With wings mounted on their backs, not fused to their arms like Wyverns, they possess superior balance and focus when channeling fire, turning breath into refined beams or arcs of elemental destruction. Their personalities reflect this precision: proud, commanding, and unwavering.
Ability Score Increase
Your Intelligence score increases by 1.
Spellfire Affinity
You know the Produce Flame cantrip. At 3rd level, you can cast Hellish Rebuke (1st level) once per long rest. At 5th level, you can cast Scorching Ray once per long rest.
- Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
- You do not need material components to cast them.
Refined Flame (Replaces Dragonflame Soul)
Because your wings are independent of your arms, you can channel fire through precise arcs and beams, not just raw cones.
When you use your Dragonflame Soul, you may choose between:
- A 15-foot cone of flame (as normal), or
- A 30-foot line that is 5 feet wide.
Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + Con mod + proficiency bonus), taking 2d6 fire damage on a fail, or half as much on a success. Damage scales with level as usual.
Flame-Soul Shield
When hit by an attack, you may use your reaction to release a controlled burst of fire. The attacker takes fire damage equal to your level, and you gain temporary HP equal to your Intelligence modifier.
You can use this once per long rest.
Commanding Presence
You gain proficiency in Arcana or Intimidation (your choice). When you deal fire damage with a spell or ability, you may attempt to Intimidate a creature within 10 feet as a bonus action (Wisdom save or be frightened until the end of your next turn). Usable once per short rest.
Optional (Level 11+ Feature): Wyrmflame Ascension
Once per long rest, you can cast Fireball centered anywhere within 60 feet, without using a spell slot. Intelligence is your casting stat.
Wyvern Variant (Subrace)
As a Wyvern-variant Datrean, you are physically attuned to agile, animalistic forms of combat. Your body carries draconic features like retractable claws, scaled limbs, or a powerful tail, and you manifest these traits instinctively in times of danger.
- Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1.
- Wyvern Shift. As a bonus action, you can partially transform by manifesting a draconic trait. Choose one of the following features each time you use this ability. It lasts for 1 minute. You can use this trait once per long rest.
- Flame Wings. You gain a flying speed of 30 feet. You must land at the end of each turn or fall.
- Tail Lash. Once per turn as a bonus action, you can make a melee attack that deals 1d6 bludgeoning damage + your Strength modifier.
- Hardened Scales. Your AC increases by 1, and you gain resistance to bludgeoning damage from nonmagical weapons during this form.
- Burning Resolve. When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can instead drop to 1 hit point. You can’t use this feature again until you finish a long rest.
Flame Mantle (Wyvern Variant Feature)
As a bonus action, you wreathe yourself in magical flame for 2 turns. While active:
- Creatures that start their turn within 5 feet of you or move within 5 feet for the first time on their turn take fire damage equal to your proficiency bonus + Constitution modifier (no save).
- You ignore your Cold Vulnerability during this time.
- You emit dim light in a 10-foot radius.
You may use this ability once per long rest. At higher levels, it gains the following enhancements:
Flame Mantle Surge (Level 11+)
When you activate Flame Mantle, you may choose to immediately unleash a fiery explosion centered on yourself. This eruption has the force of a controlled fireball:
- Effect: All creatures within a 10-foot radius must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + proficiency bonus).
- On a failed save: Targets take 4d6 fire damage.
- On a successful save: Targets take half damage.
- This explosion does not harm you or objects you are carrying.
You can only add this explosion effect once per long rest, even if you can activate Flame Mantle more than once.
Overheat (Wyvern Variant Feature)
As a bonus action, you ignite in a surge of volatile magical flame, entering an Overheated state for 2 turns. While Overheated:
- Creatures that start their turn within 5 feet of you, or enter that range for the first time on their turn, take fire damage equal to your proficiency bonus + Constitution modifier (no save).
- You ignore your Cold Vulnerability during this state.
- You emit dim light in a 10-foot radius.
You can use Overheat once per long rest.
Overheat Surge (Level 11+)
When you activate Overheat, you may unleash an immediate explosive burst of flame:
- Effect: All creatures within a 10-foot radius must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus).
- Damage: On a failed save, creatures take 4d6 fire damage; half as much on a successful one.
- You are immune to the blast, and so are any objects you carry or wear.
This fiery blast happens only when Overheat is activated, and you may use this explosive version once per long rest, even if you gain more uses of Overheat at higher levels.
Drake Variant (Subrace)
Drake Datreans are thick-scaled, muscle-bound descendants of ground-dwelling dragons. They trade speed and finesse for raw power and resilience. Unlike their wyvern kin, Drakes do not possess wings or explosive aerial mobility — instead, their breath smolders low and slow, and their bodies can withstand relentless punishment. Drakes are often mistaken for earth blood giants or walking stone beasts, with scales like scorched basalt and eyes like smoldering coals.
Ability Score Increase
Your Constitution score increases by 2 instead of Charisma.
Grounded Might
You have advantage on ability checks and saving throws made to resist being grappled, shoved, or knocked prone. Your heavy frame keeps you rooted in place.
Drakehide Resilience
When you are hit by a melee weapon attack, you can use your reaction to gain resistance to that attack’s damage type until the start of your next turn. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum 1), regaining all uses after a long rest.
Smoldering Breath (Replaces Dragon flame Soul)
Instead of a flame cone, you exhale a slow-burning smoke and ember cloud. As an action, exhale a 10-foot radius sphere of choking heat centered on yourself.
- Creatures in the area must make a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your Con mod + prof bonus).
- On a fail, they take 2d4 fire damage and have disadvantage on their next attack roll or ability check before the end of their next turn.
- Half damage on a success, no disadvantage.
You regain use of this trait after a short or long rest.
Lavablood Endurance (Level 7+)*
When you take damage that would reduce you below half your maximum HP, you can choose to ignore all ongoing conditions affecting you (such as frightened, paralyzed, poisoned, or restrained) until the end of your next turn.
You can use this trait once per long rest.
As a Datrean, you have these special traits.
Draconic Ancestry
Your lineage stems from a dragon progenitor. Choose the kind of dragon from the Draconic Ancestors table. Your choice affects your Breath Weapon and Damage Resistance traits as well as your appearance.
| Dragon | Damage Type |
|---|---|
| Black | Acid |
| Blue | Lightning |
| Brass | Fire |
| Bronze | Lightning |
| Copper | Acid |
| Gold | Fire |
| Green | Poison |
| Red | Fire |
| Silver | Cold |
| White | Cold |
Breath Weapon
When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of magical energy in either a 15-foot Cone or a 30-foot Line that is 5 feet wide (choose the shape each time). Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Constitution modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, a creature takes 1d10 damage of the type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d10 when you reach character levels 5 (2d10), 11 (3d10), and 17 (4d10).
You can use this Breath Weapon a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Cold Vulnerability
The Datrean connection to fire comes at a cost. You are vulnerable to cold damage. You take 2x the damage when hit with any cold element and can suspend your heat immunity for one turn.
Darkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
