Homebrew Whispere Species Details
Whisperers are the last fragments of people who refused to die. Not ghosts, not undead — they’re the echoes of pure emotion too powerful to pass on. These souls are anchored to physical vessels: puppets, dolls, scrap, porcelain, or whatever was nearest at the moment of death or collapse.
Each Whisperer subspecies reflects the form they've claimed and the dominant emotion that forged them.
Whisperer subspecies:
Wooden Whisper
Clings to: Wooden dolls, puppets, masks, tree-grown effigies.
Primary Emotion: Sorrow, suppressed rage.
Visual Traits: Gaunt marionette-like bodies with joints of vine and bark, hollow wooden eyes, and twisted limbs like gnarled roots.
Abilities:
-
Griefroot
The Whisper burrows into wooden or organic material, causing it to creak, warp, or momentarily animate. Can use this to hide, restrain, or disorient. -
Echo of the Forgotten
Once per short rest, implants a vision of loss in a target. Target must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or take 2d4 psychic damage and suffer Disadvantage on their next attack. -
Rage Bloom (Replaces Splinterform)
As a bonus action, the Whisper enters a state of emotional rupture. It takes 1d4 psychic damage but gains +1d8 to all attack damage. This bonus increases by 1d8 every 5 character levels. Lasts 1 minute or until the Whisper chooses to end it.
(Reason: the damage tears at their own spirit, unstable but furious.)
Scrap Whisper
Clings to: Junk, broken machinery, rusted armor, abandoned mechanical constructs.
Primary Emotion: Rage, abandonment, injustice.
Visual Traits: Twisted metallic frame of rust and scrap, vents glowing with inner heat. Smoke leaks from seams. Movements are heavy and irregular, like broken automata barely held together by anger.
Abilities :
-
Metal Fragment
The Whisper throws jagged metal from its own body in a 15-ft cone, dealing 1d6 piercing damage (Dex save DC 13 for half). Can embed into terrain, armor, or flesh. -
Natural Armor
The Whisper’s ever-reinforcing body grants it base AC 12 (natural armor). -
Junklash Surge
Once per short rest, the Whisper superheats its body in raw fury and curls into a rolling ball of molten metal, surging 30 ft in a straight line.
Any creature in or adjacent to the path must make a Dexterity save (DC 10 + Whisper’s Dex modifier) or take 1d8 damage (split evenly between fire and force).
This damage increases by +1d4 every 5 character levels.
Creatures that succeed take half damage. The terrain behind the roll glows briefly with heat.
Ceramic Whisper
Clings to: Porcelain dolls, funerary statues, ritual masks.
Primary Emotion: Grief, longing, sorrow twisted into obsession.
Visual Traits: Graceful and pristine — like a doll frozen in time. Cracks remain visible but do not cause true damage. Even broken limbs remain suspended by spiritual threads, elegantly hovering in place, animated by will alone.
Abilities :
-
Shatterstep
The Whisper ejects its soul from its shell and reforms 30 ft away, taking the shards of its porcelain body with it.
It provokes no opportunity attacks when doing so, as it becomes intangible for the duration of movement. -
Wail of Agony
The Whisper releases a psychic scream infused with despair and suffering in a 20-ft cone.
Each creature must make a Constitution or Wisdom saving throw (DC 14) — on a failure, they take 2d6 psychic damage; on success, they take half. -
Mirror Mask
Once per long rest, the Whisper can take on the exact appearance of a humanoid it has seen or slain, sustained by illusion and spirit.
This illusion is nearly perfect. Creatures who interact must succeed a DC 12 + Charisma modifier Insight check to see through the illusion.
Those who fail may treat the Whisper as someone they trust, fear, or recognize — depending on the original form taken.

Speed: 30 feet
When pain is strong and death won’t take,
A soul may bend, but it won’t break.
It clings to shell, to scrap, to wood—
To anything that says “I could.”
The Whisperers aren’t born, they stay,
Too full of fear to drift away.
Too sad to rest. Too mad to fall.
So they become what’s near and small.
A puppet’s grin. A twisted toy.
A jagged heap no longer joy.
A doll that cracks but doesn’t die,
Still moved by tears that won’t run dry.
Wood creaks. Scrap screams.
Porcelain weeps in shattered dreams.
They should be gone, but still they stare—
Trapped in forms not meant to bear.
Don’t light a match. Don’t speak too loud.
Don’t wander where the dolls are proud.
Don’t fix the toy with too much care—
The Whisperers are waiting there.
