Homebrew Apeling Species Details

Apelings are a fusion of human and monkey traits, with fur-covered bodies, tails, fangs, and a bipedal posture that combines primal agility with humanoid intellect. Slightly smaller than humans but still Medium in size, their lean, muscular frames make them naturally athletic climbers and fierce fighters. Fur colors range from black, brown, red, orange, and gray, with rare white fur considered a sign of greatness. They mature by age 12 and live around 100 years, often staying agile and vigorous until just before death. Those who live cautiously and quietly—rare among their kind—may reach 150 years of age, typically serving as wise elders or respected tribal leaders. Descended from a forgotten Monkey God, Apelings live in tight-knit tribal societies with a strong “all kin are family” mentality. Leadership is often based on age or personal accomplishments, though Apelings prefer group decision-making over strict hierarchies. Many are born wanderers, and some leave their communities by choice—or exile—to explore the wider world. Apelings get along famously with Dwarves, who respect their strength, stamina, and competitive spirit. The two races often bond over contests of physical feats and craftsmanship. Through this alliance, Apelings have adopted similar skepticism toward Elves—though they rarely ever meet them. Most Apeling adventurers remain fiercely loyal to those they call family, but pursue independence with gusto. Whether swinging from trees or vaulting over rooftops, they are bold, boastful, and always on the move.

Apeling Traits

The following are the traits of the agile and energetic Apeling.

Ability Score Increase

You are naturally quite nimble, and you carry a charming demeanor wherever you go. Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score by 1.

Age

Apelings reach adulthood by the age of 12, and commonly live to be around 100 years old. Although Apelings only have a slightly longer lifespan than humans, their active nature and lifestyle mean they burn through their years faster. Few careful and quieter Apelings may live to see 150.

Alignment

Apelings' love for adventure and energetic personalities often cause them to lean toward the chaotic alignment.

Size

Apelings are shorter than the average human, but weigh about the same if not more. Your size is Medium. Most are around 5 feet tall.

Speed

You are faster than the average humanoid. Your base walking speed is 35 feet.

Adept Climbers

Your natural agility gives you a climbing speed of 30 feet. You can also climb across ceilings, as long as you have something to hold on to.

Eager Mind

If you find someone who has a skill proficiency you don't have and they agree to teach you, you can spend a short or long rest learning that skill proficiency. You lose that skill proficiency at the end of your next long rest. You can only have one new skill proficiency learned this way at a time.

Empty Stomach

You burn through your energy faster than most humanoids and require twice as much food as a creature your size requires each day.

Heavy Slumber

During a long rest, anyone trying to wake you up must make a DC 15 Charisma ability check. Taking damage will wake you up as well as being thrown into or splashed with water.

Limit Break

Apelings are always striving to push themselves. As a reaction, when you fail Strength, Dexterity or Constitution ability check or saving throw, you can remake the check and take the new result. Once you use this ability, you can't use it again until you complete a long rest.

Skills Of The Primate

You have proficiency in Athletics. You can use your feet and tail as if they were hands. If you use both of your feet simultaneously to interact with an object, your speed becomes 0.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages

You can speak, read and write Common and one other language of your choice.

Creature Type

You are the humanoid creature type.
