Homebrew Bibliomorph Species Details

Bibliomorphs are rare and enigmatic entities—arcane lifeforms born not from womb or magic circle, but from books so profoundly steeped in use, love, and legacy that they awaken into consciousness. This transformation draws from a belief echoing across cultures: that objects, when cared for long enough, may develop a soul.

A Bibliomorph begins their existence as a humble tome—be it a grimoire, almanac, diary, or manual. Over centuries, the impressions left by readers—marginalia, oil from fingers, whispered words—form the fertile “soil” from which a soul takes root. When the moment arrives, pages shift, covers unfurl, and a new being rises: humanoid in shape, but woven from parchment, ink, and latent knowledge.

At first, they reflect the character of their source—strict if born from lawbooks, whimsical if birthed from plays, arcane if shaped by spells. But they evolve. As they walk the world, they gather experiences like new pages, layering their persona into a living story. Some choose names. Others are titled like volumes. All carry the quiet weight of memory.

Every Bibliomorph is a vessel of knowledge. Anything written upon or read by them may become part of their understanding. This makes them powerful—and perilous. A careless hand might gift them forgotten sorcery. A malicious one might awaken secrets thought lost. For this reason, most Bibliomorphs conceal their true nature, living disguised among scholars or travelers. Their belief is simple yet unshakeable: knowledge is power, and some power is best kept bound.

Few know how long they live. Fewer still understand them. But when you meet a Bibliomorph—when you hear parchment whisper as they walk, or glimpse the shimmer of ink in their eyes—you may wonder what chapter they’re in now… and whether you’re about to become a line in it.

Due to being an incarnate, living spell book, they gain the power of of what is written within, increasing their prowess.

Due to the above, they are also a bit naive.

Comprehend Script

You can read any script or written text regardless of language.

Note: This only applies to WRITTEN language - for other forms of language you still need the appropriate Language Proficiency.

Living Archive

You have Proficiency in Arcana

You can store up to three spells (of levels you can cast) within your body, as if you were a spellbook.
These spells do not count against your prepared spells, but you must spend time "writing" them into yourself during a long rest.

Arcane Resonance

Once per long rest, you can cast a spell without using a spell slot.
