Homebrew Animar Species Details

Varying wildly in origin and appearance, the Animar’s sole unifying trait is their inexplicable sentience. Whether they take the form of a golem or automaton, Animar are extremely rare. Though they can emerge from any construct with autonomous capacity, no one knows exactly why mindless machines can spontaneously become independent individuals, and any attempts to recreate the phenomenon have failed spectacularly.

Creating Your Character

At 1st level, you choose whether your character is a member of the human race or of a fantastical race. If you select a fantastical race, follow these additional rules during character creation.

Ability Score Increases

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player’s Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign.

Animar Traits

As an animar, you have the following racial traits.

Creature Type

You are a Humanoid.

Size

You are Medium.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 feet.

Constructed Resistance

You have resistance to poison damage or necrotic damage (your choice).

Modular Body

You can modify your body to suit different conditions. Choose one modification now, a second modification at 3rd level, and a third modification at 5th level.

At 1st level choose one of the following options:

  • Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.
  • Fleet. Your walking speed increases to 35 feet.

At 3rd level, you further modify your body, developing new characteristics. Choose one of the options you didn’t take at 1st level, or one of the following options:

  • Resilience. You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned.
  • Aquatic Mobility. You gain a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.
  • Impact Resistant. When you fall, you can subtract up to 50 feet from the fall when calculating falling damage.

At 5th level, you complete your body, developing new characteristics. Choose one of the options you didn’t take at 1st level, or one of the following options:

  • Reinforced Structure. You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
  • Enhanced Constructed Resistance. Gain resistance to either Lightning damage or Acid damage.

Inorganic

You don't need the same maintenance as organic creatures, represented by the following benefits:

  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You are immune to disease.

When taking a long rest you only need two hours of sleep instead of six. You must spend four hours maintaining your body to gain the benefits of the long rest.
