Homebrew Crystalforged Species Details

“They speak like crystal sings - slow, true, and hard to ignore.”

“You can tell a Crystalforged by the way they stop to listen.. not with ears, but with their core. They feel the world, not just walk through it.”

“They were made for war, but chose peace. Never forget that choice.”

The Crystalforged were created to endure the perils of the Underdark and the hidden reaches of Eldeyn. While the earliest constructs were mindless sentinels, the artificers of Gemhold and Stonehearth devoted centuries to refining these crystalline guardians. An unexpected breakthrough in soul-binding and resonant alchemy produced sapient beings - living facets of memory and purpose. Though some still call them constructs, many now grudgingly accept them as a new and evolving people.

Crystalforged are formed from radiant gemstones and living stone, but they can feel pain, hope, and longing. Shaped for vigilance and survival, they now seek meaning beyond the duties of wardens and weapons. A Crystalforged can be a tireless protector, an implacable avenger, or a visionary searching for belonging in a world that never asked for them.

Living Stone and Resonance

Crystalforged are composed of faceted mineral and polished plates that gleam with inner light. Strands of alchemical crystal and gem-laced latticework serve as sinew and muscle, sheathing a core of hardened quartz or precious stone. This Resonant Core anchors their consciousness and glows when they channel magic or strong emotion.

Most Crystalforged share a roughly humanoid silhouette - broad-shouldered, segmented limbs, and angular visages with gem-like eyes set beneath protective ridges. Despite these similarities, each Crystalforged’s coloration, veining, and crystalline formations are unique, often reflecting their origin or the soul bound within.

Although they were created, Crystalforged are living creatures. Resting, healing magic, and the Medicine skill all work on them as they do other humanoids.

Crystalforged Personality

The Crystalforged were shaped to serve, to watch, and to endure. For much of their existence, they had a singular purpose - whether to defend the caverns, patrol the Underdark’s threshold, or bear burdens too great for flesh alone. Now, they face freedom, and many struggle to define their identity beyond function.

The typical Crystalforged is reserved and contemplative, viewing the world through a lens of measured curiosity. Many take comfort in pursuing clear goals - guarding an expedition, cataloguing new gems, or learning the traditions of organic peoples. Others revel in their newfound autonomy, exploring feelings and forging bonds that once seemed irrelevant.

Some Crystalforged ignore the concept of gender entirely, while others adopt a gendered identity or appearance to express facets of the soul they sense within. As they grow into individuality, they often modify their forms - carving new sigils, polishing their plating, or embedding fragments of treasured stones.

Crystalforged often exhibit distinctive personality traits—echoes of past lives, or simply the idiosyncrasies of beings still learning to be.

Crystalforged Traits

Your crystalforged character has the following traits. A few of the traits give you a choice; consider how your choice reflects the purpose for which your character was built.

Ability Score Increase

You may increase one ability score by 2 and another by 1.

Age

Crystalforged mature fully within a year of awakening or crafting, but age slowly, with most living over 300 years. Some claim to remember lives before their crystal form - echoes from reincarnated souls, or deep resonant memory.

Alignment

Crystalforged tend to lean lawful or neutral, their minds shaped by clarity, design, and longevity. However, those who remember pain, injustice, or freedom often become stalwart defenders of individuality, leaning chaotic.

  • Most Common: Lawful Neutral, Neutral Good, True Neutral

  • Less Common: Lawful Good, Chaotic Neutral

  • Rare: Chaotic Evil, Lawful Evil

Size

Crystalforged vary in shape depending on their origin or purpose. Most stand between 5.5 and 6.5 feet tall and weigh around 250 to 350 pounds. Your size is Medium.

To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

Size modifier = 2d6

Height = 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches

Weight in pounds = 270 + (4 × your size modifier)

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Gem-Formed Resilience

You are a construct, though you appear humanoid in shape. You have the following traits:

  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.

  • You are immune to disease.

  • You don’t sleep and can’t be put to sleep by magical means. Instead, you enter a Rest State for 4 hours to gain the benefits of a long rest.

Resonant Rest

When you take a long rest, you must spend at least four hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.

Crystal Plating

Your body is partially armored with natural crystalline growths, which provide innate protection:

  • You have a base Armor Class of 13 + your Constitution modifier.

  • You can still wear armor if you are proficient with it, and you use whichever AC is higher.

  • You are not considered to be wearing armor for the purposes of racial traits, spells, or class features that require you to be unarmored.

Resonant Core

At the heart of every Crystalforged lies a resonant core, a living gemstone that hums with latent energy.

  • As a bonus action, you can activate your Resonant Core to emit a wave of harmonic energy. Creatures of your choice within 10 feet must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) or be disoriented until the start of your next turn (disadvantage on their next attack roll or ability check).

  • You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Terran, and one other language of your choice.

Crystalforged Subtypes

No two Crystalforged are shaped the same. Over centuries, their creators refined specialized designs to serve distinct purposes in the depths of Eldeyn. From these blueprints - and the soul stuff that quickened them - emerged two primary subtypes:

Prismborne Facets

Prismborne Facets were designed not only to endure but to illuminate. Their forms are lighter, faceted in ways that bend and refract ambient light, granting them keen perception and the power to manipulate illusions. Once prized as scouts, guides, and lore-keepers, these Crystalforged carry within them a spark of brilliance - both literal and figurative - that sets them apart. Whether casting light into hidden crevices or slipping unseen past watchful eyes, the Prismborne are living testaments to the ingenuity of Gemhold’s artisans.

Facet of Refraction

You were designed for perception, light manipulation, and strategic versatility.

  • You know the Light cantrip. At 3rd level, you can cast Mirror Image once per long rest. At 5th level, you can cast Invisibility once per long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability.

  • You have darkvision out to 60 feet, and you can see normally in magical darkness up to that range for 1 minute once per long rest.

Gemward Sentinels

Stalwart and unyielding, Gemward Sentinels embody the endurance of stone. Crafted to stand vigil against the terrors of the Underdark and protect the fragile alliances of Eldeyn’s subterranean cities, they are patient guardians whose forms bear the weight of centuries. Their crystalline plating is thicker and more rugged, designed to withstand relentless assault, while their cores radiate a steady, calming resonance.

Facet of Endurance

You were shaped for defense, patience, and unyielding presence.

  • You gain advantage on saving throws against being moved or knocked prone.

  • Once per long rest, you may reduce bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage from a single attack by 1d12 + your Constitution modifier as a reaction.
