Homebrew Demorian Species Details
Thane Thagult Bloodanvil once told me, during a drunken tirade, that the demorians are the dwarffolk's most dangerous adversaries, and if one is wise you never face them on the open field of battle. Stick to your strongholds and halls where their tactical and arcane superiority is less effective.
To feel the ground shake under the march of a demorian army, to feel the reverberations of their war drums and the rumbling of their war machines is the nightmare of all civilized folk. Yet, the Demorians seem to have turned their gazes beyond the lands of their forebears. In Esraveld they have found a sense of stability and almost kinship with the other peoples of those lands. Now their vision of conquest looks much farther afield, but their neighbors still watch with still wariness.
Every soldier who lives through a fight with a demorian tells of confronting a hulking foe that can cleave through a warrior with a single blow, part of a force that can cut down enemies as though they were trembling stalks of wheat before the scythe. Only a skilled and determined hero can hope to survive single combat with a Demorian warrior.
Brutal and fearless, the Demorian Empire ever seeks to expand its domain. Motivated by their zealous desire to dominate and bring order to a chaotic and savage world and their need to satisfy the demands of the Sokrateia, the Demorians ever strive to increase the power of the Empire and bring glory to their House.
Born of Blood and Cunning
The Nine were the first and staunchest acolytes of Asmund and through the fell power of the ancient Remyrin Age Artefact known only as the Demonstone; these nine grey elven veteran warriors were transformed into something the world had never seen. The Novem'appare (The Nine Shields) were chosen by Asmund because each descended from one of the Nine Great Ela'dryn Houses of Cerys'Galin and were the greatest that each of those houses had to offer. Of these nine one stood above all others, General Paramount Gel'Enderum, the Guardian of the Vale and Chief Captain of Cerys'Galin, to which all House Captains deferred to. Before the Grey March, it was the General Paramount who discovered and cleared the treacherous path through Turenia onward to Ulvrike, and it was he who established and built the Stronghold of Cerys'Galin to defend Aranoste. After the Grey March, it was he who held Cerys'Galin against the Nation it once swore to defend. However, Gel'Enderum, seduced by Asmund would eventually lead Asmund's Chosen Ela'dryn to their dark fates. Warped by the Demonstone's Power, these Nine Ela'dryn Lords would become the Forebears of the Nine Great Houses of the Demorians. But as Asmund's influence and power over the city grew, so did the infernal miasmic aura of the Demonstone. Like all things from the Remyrin Age, the very essence of such artefacts twists its surroundings into dark reflections of what it once was. In time the very stone of the city above would soak up its infernal power and spread its effects like a miasmic plague. Unlike the Novem'appare who simply became smarter, larger, hardier, and stronger versions of themselves, the citizenry became warped and devolved into hulking and terrifying mockeries of their former selves. By the time the Novem'appare realized what was happening, it was too late, and when they sought to confront Asmund; he was nowhere to be found. (As the Vynirean had discovered his tampering and had gathered him to be judged by their decree). The General Paramount Gel'Enderum, believed he had fled south to the City of Helcrist and so he gathered to him those few who seemed to have some semblance of their former selves remaining. Those who's natures and minds were too far gone for redemption, he had captured and imprisoned. Next, he found for his people a new place as the Demonstone's corruption was too powerful and he believed if they continued to dwell there that they would all devolve further. From deep within hidden mountain caverns, he began to put his plans in motion. The Remyrin, though clever did not foresee what lay ahead, The Novem'appare, who still retained their elven visages began to venture to the City of Helcrist. Slowly, at first. They brought something the Remyrin were quite fond of, slaves. Most of these were the hulking deformed beast that were once elven, but now savage bloodthirsty brutes. However, hidden amongst them were moles, smarter and sharper than their brutish brethren. Often the brutes were put into fighting pits, or the Great Helcrist Harena as bloodsport, but those who had won out against the bestial change often, more than not, were risen to stations of bodyguards or elite household soldiers. The General Paramount convinced his loyalist that it was Asmund and the Remyrin who were to be blamed for their curse. It took a total of three years before The General Paramount gave the sign to attack. Their victory was swift, though many of the citizenry of Cerys'Galin lay dead or wounded so did that of Helcrist. Heads of Remyrin Bloodlines were put to death, but a handful kept alive, these the General Paramount who wed off to his elite eight captains, taking for himself the daughter of the house that held the highest station. A few Remyrin of lesser houses sued for pardons and were allowed to live, as were much of the Remyrin whose blood was so diluted they were barely considered true Remyrin, even by their own people's standards. After the city and the surrounding lands were secured, those followers of the General Paramount would crown him the first Emperor of Orcrest, Emperor Gel'Fangrim (The Grimfang).
Of those citizens who survived the transformation of Cerys'Galin but whose minds were broken; they would become what are known as the Orcs, the Fallen Ones, and they would disperse into the mountains to become their own peoples. Emperor Gel'Fangrim declared his peoples the Demorians, named after the Demonstone itself, so they would never forget their origins nor shun the truth of it. Eventually, the local remyrin populace would be given allowance to leave the lands now named Demoria, or remain but marry into the Orcrest's new elite. With every would-be remyrin uprising the Novem'appare charters for the remyin grew ever stricter, which eventually led to prohibitions on breeding with one another, thus over time their numbers dwindled or were simply bred out. In time Emperor Gel'Fangrim built for himself a great citadel which also became a place to come and pay homage. This would become not only his Keep but his temple, as the worship of all others save him was outlawed, punishable by death. Ironfang Temple was the last building made in the Ela'dryn-style by the demorians.
Gel'Fangrim and The Sokrateia
Demorians believe themselves a superior creation; due to their physical and mental enhancement by the Demonstone. In a way it also instilled in them a slight amount of megalomania. Over the centuries as a way to balance this innate thirst for power there came into creation a set of principles, they named The Sokrateia. The Sokrateia is the half Code of Conduct and Half Code of Honor and the inspiration from which the derive their culture. It bases this off the blood in their veins and the way they were created, holding within themselves a perfect mingling of the blood of an elite warrior caste of elves and the mingling of ancient remyrin bloodlines. Add to this admixture the cleverness and cunning blessed upon them by the Vynirean Deity Asmodeus and you have a terrifying lot indeed. Out in the wilds nature rewards the strong and mercilessly eliminates the weak. Thus, they believe they help nature it along its course by crushing the weak underfoot and bringing about order and structure in the world around them.
Demorians believe that if they die with honor and live by Sokrateia, their spirits go to the plane of Echarus, the Eternal Battlefield. Specifically, Echarus is a layer of Infinite Abyss, where they join Gel'Fangrim's army and fight on his behalf in the endless war against the followers of the Arch Fiends that claim many of the neighboring layers as their own. Gel'Fangrim sees this conflict as a chance to pit his people against an eager foe and enable them to prove their worth before the Vynirean deities and the Great Asmund, himself. Over time the Plane of Echarus has continued to climb ever higher toward Asmund's own Plane of Ardenslex, as Gel'Fangrim conquers and moves his armies ever onward towards his nemesis. It was Gel'Fangrim himself who asked the Vynir to place him and those who worship him into the Infinite Abyss, just for the purpose of eventually confronting and destroying the Asmund, the God he once devoted himself body and soul to. As each layer is transformed by the nature of the being that controls it, once Gel'Fangrim vanquishes each new adversary and moves his armies into that layer, the new layer becomes the New Echarus and the old Echarus retains the qualities of Echarus until a new Arch Fiend or similar powerful being takes control of it for themselves. As Gel'Fangrim has conquered he has made a habit of making a layer's old master swear fealty to him and as such has begun to create a mirroring situation to Asmund's own Council of Hell. Of his Dark Conclave, he has conquered and made the Archfiends Lurthic, Maglubis, and Vrothma Duke to Rule in his name the layers he has conquered and moved beyond. As to date, none has been able to supplant or outmaneuver him, and in a sense continue to remain as loyal to him as beings of their natures allow. Because of this goblinoids such as bugbears, goblins and hobgoblins always differ to Demorians in the prime material plane. Also, Demorians are always in direct conflict against the Followers of Gorrumesh, the Orcbinder; who has ever continued to make himself a thorn in Gel'Fangrim's side.
The Sokrateia demands that every demorian join in the Great Demorian Army when they come of age. It demands that they treat their superiors with honor and differ to them until they are able to defeat them in honorable combat. These duels are ritualistic by nature and held at very specific times. As Sokrateia dictates; a Patriarch/Matriarch, the General Paramount, Warlord, or Warleader cannot be challenged in times of war; thus, it is a wise Ruler who seeks to always be at war. The same proves true within noble houses when children wish to claim the title of Patriarch/Matriarch of their House. In Demorian-held nations, it is quite rare for them to allow non-demorians to take up arms or to join the Great Army, as such honors of warfare are reserved for Demorians alone. Additionally, it keeps lesser races from having the experience or means to rise against their betters. Speaking of which, Demorians treat their inferiors surprisingly well. Most slaves bought are given a stipend and if they so choose can purchase their freedom and become freeman and given rights to purchase and own land, start business endeavors, to marry other freeborn citizens and to bear freeborn children. Slaves do not have such rights, and should they bear offspring such fruits are born into slavery as well, even if one of the parents are freeborn. Should one of the parents be demorian, this offspring is scooped up at birth, and sent to the Dovindotive (The Proving Grounds) to be fed on demorian breast milk (if the mother was demorian, she is sent to the Dovindotive as well), there they are weened and raised to be one of the Dikastis (Judges) for the Dovindotive. Potential Dikastis are trained by veteran Dikastis and often there is a shared kinship between them as often the case between mentors and pupils. Offspring born of Dikastis are either raised to continue in their parents' footsteps, or if the Dikastis who bore such offspring are noteworthy and the spawn shows strength and skill, they are allowed to be adopted into one of the great houses, as either a legitimate heir or if heirs are plentiful as a household guard. If the demorian mother survives her time in the Dovindotive, she may be allowed to return to her old life. However, this is dependent on the House's Patriarch/Matriarch's allowance. In fact, if The Head of the House so chooses, they can instead make an example of their childer as a sacrifice to either Gel'Fangrim or the Dovindotive (this doesn't necessarily mean a literal sacrifice, as some became Acolytes or Servants to the Faith or are kept in the Dovindotive for breeding purposes, or as laborers or servants of a sort, thought bereft of House Ties) Male Demorians often suffer similar fates, but if they are of a noteworthy house may sue for a trial by combat. If they are victorious, they are pardoned of their mistake. Rarer still is when a victorious accused offers up themselves for their offspring's freedom.
The Sokrateia dictates that all able-bodied demorians serve in the Legion. Therein, they are taught discipline, tactics and the advantages of working together. It is expected that no matter one's personal feelings for the demorian next to them, one is to protect a shieldmate with their life. Such conflicts are reserved for challenges, but on the field, one forgets any grudges or insults. This often retains truth with interactions with non-demorians as well. A demorian can treat with an enemy or opposing field commander and be absolutely cordial. However, if they meet on the battlefield, no quarter is expected nor given. Behaving in Honorable Accord is considered the best etiquette and you can be assured that what a Demorian tells you one on one is a concrete truth. However, in open conduct they often speak with deceptive truths and veiled threats. If a demorian is unable to enter the Legion due to some physical abnormality, they are immediately sent to train as a Warcaster. It is not that demorians see the arcane crafts as a lesser form of war; more that they see it as a less honorable way to win it. The Sokrateia demands that a demorian bring honor to house and nation, in that order. Devastating a battlefield with fireballs and arcane fire makes it more difficult to recognize who was the one truly responsible for the death of an enemy field commander and more often than not those honors are immediately claimed by the Caster of the Most Powerful House in attendance. It should be noted that lessons in the arcane are not just for the demorians of weaker statures. It is actually considered a high honor upon one's house to have individuals with mastery over both the martial and arcane fields. Finally, if a demorian is both weak of body, and mind they have one last opportunity to prove themselves. The Demorian faith is very single minded as they are forbidden of the worship of any other deity other than that of Gel'Fangrim. Though over time their colonized lands have allowed for rooms of other faiths, these are for non-demorians and are rarely more than small shrines. Demorians caught worshipping deities other than Gel'Fangrim are immediately pulled from their homes by the devout and sacrificed (literally) to The God Paramount, Gel'Fangrim. There are no trials of combat, no trails before the senate, and no for forgiveness, there is only death. Even outside, demorian-controlled lands, any demorian caught paying homage to a god not Gel'Fangrim is blacklisted, and should they ever find themselves in the lands of their forebears and discovered; they are likely to meet a grisly end; either by the sacrificial dagger or via assassination. Should a demorian be weak in all three aspects of demorian culture, they are either sacrificed to Gel'Fangrim or simply banished. Their name is blacklisted and to be forgotten henceforth, never to be spoken again. It's as if they never existed at all. No one speaks to them, or even deigns to recognize them, they are Atelis (imperfect) and may not even claim to be of demorian lineage. If it is ever discovered that have revealed their true names or have claimed to be anything other than an Atelis, assassins are sent to erase them. A slain Atelis ceases to be. The assassins clean up any proof of them ever having existed at all, the people that they revealed their true names to meet the similar fates. Occasionally, such situations get botched and entire neighborhoods are burned to the ground, but more often than not it is just the Atelis' residence that is swept clean with not even bodies to identify as victims.
Life in the Legion
Demorians survive through discipline and superior battle tactics. Theirs is a life that has no place for weakness, and every warrior must be strong and disciplined enough to understand their place in the legion and The Sokrateia. Demorians aren’t interested in wealth, alliances or creating peaceful relations. They care only for the glory of their house and their standing in Demorian Society. To them Respect and Fear go hand in glove. Despite their insatiable desire for battle and personal glory, they know that true power lies in the Legion, and it is the Legion that keeps the other nations from open conflict with Demoria. Their enemies are fully aware of what they will meet on the battlefield, an army so vast and disciplined and well trained that it will roll over them without mercy.
Constant Flow of the War Machine
Conquest breeds casualties and in a culture that demands that all its members serve in the legion, it is no surprise that the demorians have a need to keep their numbers up. That being said, demorians are actually very choosy about who they mix blood with. The Nine Main Houses tend to only choose stock from amongst themselves or from one of their lesser branches. Though, now and then, a truly esteemed and accomplished Legionnaire, Warcaster or Devout of Gel'Fangrim will be approached for those very reasons. Demorians marriages are quite a resplendent affair, and often used as an excuse to broker alliances between the attending houses, no matter their ranks. More often than not, the potential mate of the greater or higher-ranking house gives allowance to the new spouse to bear their great house's name.
However, it is not unheard for the houses to decide to allow (force) a Dikastis to reproduce with the lesser creatures in order to make war machines (fodder) for their endless conquest, such examples are Demogren (Ogre-mix), Tremorol (Troll-Mix), and Demojogs (Jotunn Mixes). However, these war machines are rarely given allowances to train in the legion for fear that they may turn on their masters. Demogren and Tremorols are often used more for assailing walls or breaking frontline formations before the Legion comes into play. However, it is usually given over to Demojogs to lead such forays and it is not unheard of for Tremorols to be granted honors and more rarely, station. Though at least one Demojog has been granted membership into one of the Greater Houses via marriage arrangements. Of the three, Tremorols are considered the most devious and dangerous.
Demorians often mate for life, that is if a demorian coupling bears offspring. Only if such a union bears no fruit before one goes forth to serve under the Great Conqueror or one of the two involved are proven dishonorable are certain allowances give for the remaining demorian to seek or be approached for a marriage proposal a second time. Being such a disciplined lot, it is rare for a demorian spouse to stray, and such violations are met with a trip to the Dovindotive. Survivors are granted their life, and their spouses may sue for divorce. However, it is not unheard of for a demorian couple to bring in a third party to help in the act of bearing an offspring if their marriage proves unfruitful. The third party is often a noteworthy Dikastis and such actions aren't even allowed by the senate until the marriage has born no fruit by a decade's time.
By 5 years old a demorian is considered a juvenile, and by age 10 it is considered ready for the legion training. A demorian will then train in the legion from anywhere of up to a year (for those who will become Warcasters or Members of the Devout) or three years (if they are especially hard to train) and then continue to serve in the legion for at five years before being allowed to be discharged for honorable service. However, some demorians make a lifetime career of serving in the legion, but all demorians must serve the minimal five years before their Patriarch/Matriarch is allowed to find for them a suitable spouse.
Preparation for the Legion
Young demorians must be conditioned properly in order to be ready for Life in the Legion, and for Demorian Society in general. Before they can even walk, they undergo strength training. This is done in a pulley and suspension apparatus, they are strapped into a harness and held aloft and through their infantile struggling they pull cords that lift suspended weights. These weights are increased as they grow stronger and by the time they learn to walk they are already taunt with corded muscled. When they learn to walk the training becomes even more strenuous and they undergo further weight training and exercises to increase their reflexes and dexterity. This is also the time that they begin to attend demorian etiquette classes and are given over to a tutor in their free time. Their early years are fraught with tests of strength, fierce competition and nothing in the way of maternal or paternal love. Not to say that they don't spend time with their parents, it's just that most such interactions are usually very professional in nature. Occasionally, a parent shows warmth and affection but usually even this is when the child has done something worthy of note. The children that can’t endure the rigors of this early life are usually the ones that wind up being Warcasters or a Devout of the Conquerors flock.
Foes bound by Fate
The relationship between Demorians and Orcs have been brutal, even from the start. Though the two came from the same beginnings, due to the Demonstone's influence, not all were made equal. To begin with, The Novem'appare and those able to be salvaged by the artefact's influence immediately began to round up and imprison those who lost all semblance of themselves to its power. However, there were those still who left before the Demonstone's Influence had taken full grip on their minds and spirits, and many more who fled into the dark holes that are found all throughout the mountains and the pass that leads to Turenia. One of these captured abominations somehow escaped and worse yet had the cunning and intelligence enough to elude their demorian captors thereafter. It would seem that the longer one was away from the Demonstone's influence the less clouded with blood rage their thoughts became. The individual who escaped, was one of these, and he never forgot the insult. Gorrumesh, was his name and eventually he would come to be known as the Orcbinder. There are also rumors that indicate the Gorrumesh was in fact, the tenth member of the conclave of Asmund's chosen, but as of yet there is not conformation for truth in this matter. After Gorrumesh evaded capture and learned the demorians plan for others like him. So, he began a crusade to seek out and gather all those cursed and found unworthy by The Novem'appare own standards. These unworthy they deemed Orcs. The demorians rarely speak of this mistake and when they do it is with disdain and disgust. Gorrumesh, the Orcbinder would make it his life goal to bring about the fall of the Demorians for what was done to his people. As it seems, Gorrumesh also teaches his brood that it was in fact, The Novem'appare who resigned them to their fates, and not Asmund as Demorians preach. Thus, when Demorians and Orcs meet, it always ends in bloodshed. Demorians on the other hand see Orcs as mockeries of themselves. A bestial reflection and a reminder of what their fates might have been. So alike, yet so vastly different. And like Gel'Fangrim, Gorrumesh has also found himself tasting deific power as all his brood roar his name in their rage and bellows of war.
Despite strained past conflicts between the elves and the demorians, very little personal hatred remains. Due to the Demonstone's Power, the Ela'dryn of Cerys'Galin traded their elven beauty and longevity for immense strength, but it would seem all animosity from the Gray March has been buried with time. In fact, it might quite possibly have been the demorians involvement on the side of the elves that helped them regain Aranoste. Since that time, all interactions have been cordial at worse, and the Demorians have sworn not to set their eyes on Aranoste as long as the elves control it. However, they made it very clear that if the elves lose it again, Demoria will take it and claim it as its own. In spite of its elven relations in Esraveld, Demoria has no qualms at all about conquering elven nations outside of Esraveld, or even Aranoste for that matter.
Demorians treat dwarves somewhat differently from other foes, because they have a great respect for their industriousness and battle-hardiness. Three such kingdoms border their nation, and it one of the primary reasons Demoria has not Marched on many of its neighbors. They know that despite the bad blood between the D'vargard and Torvandor, when it comes to an outside force, they have no issues with burying those conflicts long enough to smash a common foe under their hammer and anvil tactics. Though Demorians covet the holds that dwarves build they would rarely decide it worth it to lay siege to one. However, the have quietly cleared and colonized several lost dwarven halls, they see no reason to go to direct war with the stout folk but nor will they let such an opportunity slip through their finger. Much of the respect they feel for the bearded folk even translates outside of Esraveld, with the Demorians first seeking alliances with dwarves rather than open war. Just as the dwarves refuse to face a demorian legion on the open field, so to do the demorians refuse to battle dwarves in their own halls.
Honoring Strength
Demorians appreciate physical prowess and formidable combat ability in any form. As such they bear great respect for foes that best them in battle. If a nation proves too formidable and should their Legions be routed or broken by the tactics or strength of an opposing horde, the demorians will show great respect to those who won the day. Afterwards they will send emissaries to seek alliances and learn the names of those who bested them. Even great warriors who have fallen but shown great skill in battle are often taken to the Demorian General's Own Quarters to be cleaned and then later carried with honor through the very gates they died defending. The names of such mighty foes are recorded and never forgotten, and Demorian Bards will recount their battles and deeds later to the nations from which they hailed. Often when an alliance or treaties is agreed upon between the Demorians and another Nation or Peoples, Demorians will uphold the agreements until a time that the other group proves too weak to be worthy of their relations. It is not unheard of for Demorians to staunchly support those that once were their foes but bested them in battle, to openly seeking conquest over those very same nations a generation or two later. The only foes they don't reserve respect for are Orcs. They are simply just too unworthy of such honor.
