Homebrew Crystal Carrier Species Details

The Crystal Carriers are living paradoxes — beings of unimaginable strength who choose to chain themselves in order to walk among the world without destroying it. They are masters of telekinesis beyond mortal comprehension, able to bend reality’s matter with thought alone. For most, telekinesis is a skill or a tool; for the Carriers, it is a birthright and a curse, a tidal force in their minds that threatens to unmake everything they touch if left unchecked.

To keep their devastating power under control, Carriers bind themselves with massive crystals: colossal stones infused with runes and psychic seals, each one crafted to dampen and restrain their minds. These crystals are not simply weights — they are psychic anchors that absorb and ground the raging storm of energy within their bearer. They come in many forms: jagged shards of mountains, monolithic slabs carved from ancient quarries, even floating geometric prisms the size of keeps. Some weigh a single ton, others over eighteen thousand tons, though all are carried with grim ease by their wielders.

Yet even restrained, a Crystal Carrier’s power is awe-inspiring. They can crush enemies with invisible force, rip stone from the earth to form barriers or weapons, and level battlefields with a gesture. Their combat style is fluid and destructive — their crystals are not simply a burden but also their most dangerous weapon, swung, hurled, or shattered into a thousand blades and then called back in an instant. Carriers learn to fight not only with their minds, but with the weight they carry — turning restraint into strength.

A Life of Restraint

From their earliest days of training, Carriers are taught that their true enemy is not the world, but themselves. Without discipline, even a fleeting surge of emotion could destroy a town or bring down a mountain. Thus, the first step of a Carrier’s path is not learning to use their power, but to carry it. The crystal is chosen or forged in a sacred ceremony; its weight reflects the Carrier’s potential and responsibility.

Carriers who reject their crystals — who abandon restraint — are rare and feared. They are called Shattered, and the devastation they leave behind has given rise to many of the world’s darkest legends. It is said that the Carriers’ ancestors themselves were responsible for ancient cataclysms, and the crystal tradition was born to ensure such horrors would never happen again.

The First Carrier: Draven

Among the Carriers, one name is spoken with reverence and fear: Draven, the First Crystal Carrier, also called the Foundation.

Long before the Order of Carriers was formalized, before there were even words to name what they were, Draven walked the earth as a living storm. Born in an age of chaos, his telekinetic power was so immense that he was said to have ended wars simply by walking into battle — cities would crumble, armies would scatter, the sky itself would darken in his presence. His mind was so powerful it could tear the very crust of the world apart.

But Draven was no tyrant. He was haunted by the destruction he caused even when he did not wish it. A single dream had leveled his village. A stray thought once split a river in two and drowned an army. Knowing he could not live without restraint, he journeyed to the deepest mountains and sought the wisdom of ancient seers. Together, they devised a way to bind his mind without destroying it — the first of the crystals.

Yet even the greatest crystal could not fully contain him. So he forged a second, then a third, then more. In the end, he carried six colossal crystals, each heavier than the last, said to weigh more than whole continents combined. To this day, no one has equaled his burden or his power.

Legends tell of Draven walking into a battlefield carrying all six of his titanic crystals floating behind him, each one blotting out the sun. With a thought, he would let just a fraction of his power slip through, enough to silence armies or calm earthquakes, before sealing it again. When he finally vanished — walking into the horizon with his crystals looming like mountains in the sky — the world mourned, though many secretly sighed in relief.

Some believe that Draven still walks somewhere far beyond the known lands, carrying his six crystals and keeping the world in balance. Others whisper that he is dead, and that if his crystals were ever found and broken, his power would return to destroy the world. His name remains the highest honor and greatest cautionary tale among Carriers.

To this day, every Carrier bows their head when they speak of him: the one who first chose to carry his burden rather than unleash it.

Crystal Carrier Traits

uses massive crystals for ways of life and to restrict their powers

Burdened Mind, Unshakable Will

  • You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, frightened, or stunned, as your mind is already under constant strain and discipline from containing your own power.

  • You can telekinetically manipulate objects as if casting the mage hand cantrip, but with a weight limit equal to 20 x your level (in pounds). At higher levels (GM’s discretion), you can increase this weight further.

  • However, the burden of your crystal makes you slower: your base walking speed is reduced by 5 feet
