Homebrew Yaoguri Species Details
The Yaoguri are a proud, warlike species descended from a population of humans that were teleported in a planeshifting incident to a far flung toril-like planet, except with one big difference, there was no Aetherous Magic here. They became the stalkers of Yowgurn’s brutal and alien rainforests. Towering, muscled, and armored with honor and technology, the Yaoguri embody the ideal of the hunter: patient, cunning, and unrelenting. Their society is steeped in honor, blood-oaths, and ritual combat, shaped by generations of survival in a world devoid of magic. Yet, though their people arose untouched by the Aether’s gifts, they do not dismiss it outright — the Yaoguri are cautious students of magic’s ways, wary of its dangers, but fascinated by its mysteries. Their innate connection to Yowgurn’s dead magic zone grants them natural anti-magic properties, making them fearsome foes to spellcasters and magical constructs alike.
The Yaoguri are tall (2.3–2.7 meters) and powerfully built, with corded muscles beneath plates of bone-hardened skin. Forward-set predator eyes glow faintly gold or green in low light. Their faces bear fangs, tusks, and sometimes a Separated Mandible capable of speech, ritual displays, or tearing flesh. Yaoguri skin ranges from ash-grey to iron-bronze with dark green and black spots, often decorated with clan brands and scar-tattoos earned through combat.
The Yaoguri live by the Charr-Kai, the Code of the Hunt:
- Strength, loyalty, and courage above all.
- Deception in battle is skill; deception in peace is shame.
- Every blood-oath binds the soul; betrayal is death without honor.
They are ruled by the Council of Elders, composed of the wisest warlords, battle-scholars, and fleetmasters of each great clan. Decisions of war, peace, and diplomacy are made through debate, challenge, and ritual contest.
Hunting — be it of great beasts, void leviathans, or enemy fleets — is central to their identity. Their ritual hunts test cunning and courage, and their warriors sing long sagas of their prey and victories.
Technology
Yaoguri technology is non-magical but deeply advanced:
Hunter-ships: Sleek, dark-hulled voidships bristling with plasma lances, coil cannons, and stealth systems.
Armor and weaponry: Bio-steel plates keyed to the warrior’s aura; blades and gauntlets forged in the storms of Yowgurn.
Sensor and counter-magic tech: Devices designed to map Aether currents, identify magical threats, and exploit them.
Homeworld: Yowgurn
Yowgurn is a harsh world of volcanic ranges, deep alien rainforests, razor-edged cliffs, and acid-salted seas. The largest dead magic zone known, it shaped the Yaoguri — no sorcery ever softened their struggle. Ancient strongholds carved into mountains, fortress-cities of steel and stone, and sacred hunting preserves cover the planet. The very land whispers of ancient battles, honor, and survival.
Malar: The Beastlord’s New Chosen
After a great cataclysm, Malar turned his gaze away from the scattered and broken peoples of the Realms. He saw in the Yaoguri not merely survivors, but the perfect embodiment of his creed: Brutality, A species born in a world where only the strongest endured, and warriors who seek challenge not for cruelty, but for the sacred test of the self.
Where the lost races of Toril fled to sanctuaries or begged for divine aid, the Yaoguri fought, bled, and thrived. Malar answered their unspoken call, abandoning his weakened ties to the refugee peoples of Toril and instead binding his essence to the Yaoguri. Among them, Malar is no longer seen as merely a god of destruction — he is the patron of the hunt’s sacred cycle, of the predator who strengthens the world by weeding out weakness, of the unbroken will that claims victory through the strength of fang and steel. His presence is felt in the great war-chants, in the breath before the strike, in the storm of battle. His sigil — the crimson claw — marks the prows of Yaoguri warships, the hilts of ceremonial blades, and the gates of their fortress-cities.

Magic Resistance
Their natural heavy magic resistance (a quirk of their physiology and Yowgurn’s dead magic zone) disrupts weak enchantments near them and interferes with direct magical manipulation — making them despised foes of sorcerers, and highly feared.
They cannot cast spells under 3rd level if they are of Arcane Origin; additionally, against spells of Arcane Origin they have resistance to damage by spells.
Spells of Arcane Origin are spells that are wizard, sorcerer, warlock, and bard in origin (or being casted from), with some exceptions.
