Homebrew [H] Pygmy Dragon Species Details

The Pygmy Dragon is a smaller species of dragon, typically 10 to 12 feet long and weighing 500 to 700 pounds. While not as physically imposing as their larger cousins, they are highly intelligent and agile, with strong elemental affinities and innate magical abilities. Pygmy Dragons are natural spellcasters, with an elemental breath weapon as a last-resort offensive tool. They possess a flying speed that they unlock at level 8, and are equally adept at climbing and swimming. Unlike larger dragons, Pygmy Dragons tend to be more pragmatic, often relying on strategy and magic over brute strength, though they retain the same pride, wisdom, and fierce independence.

Pygmy Dragons share the following racial traits. Ability Score increase: INT +2, DEX +1. Draconic Species: Choose an element for your resistance and breath. Robust Scales: 13 AC + CON. Flight: gain flight at level 8.

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Bite and Claw

Gain a bite attack that deals 1d8 piercing damage on a hit.
Gain a claw attack that deals 1d6 slashing damage on a hit.

You can Speak, Read, and Write in Common and Draconic.

Draconic Species

As a Pygmy Dragon, you embody the elemental power of your chosen affinity. You gain resistance to your selected element and can channel this power into a breath weapon that grows more potent as you mature.

Elemental Affinity:

You may choose one of the following elements to represent your Pygmy Dragon:

  • Fire:
    You gain resistance to Fire damage and gain a Breath Weapon. Your breath weapon exudes a blaze of fire, dealing 1d6 fire damage in a 15-foot cone. Creatures that fail their Dexterity saving throw (DC 12) take full damage, while those who succeed take half damage.

    • Breath Weapon Scaling: Your breath weapon damage increases by 1d6 fire damage every 5 levels, starting at level 5 (2d6 at level 5, 3d6 at level 10, etc.).

  • Cold:
    You gain resistance to Cold damage and gain a Breath Weapon. Your breath weapon releases a frosty blast, dealing 1d6 cold damage in a 15-foot cone. Targets in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 12) or take full damage. A successful save reduces the damage to half and negates the freezing effect.

    • Breath Weapon Scaling: Your breath weapon damage increases by 1d6 cold damage every 5 levels, starting at level 5 (2d6 at level 5, 3d6 at level 10, etc.).

  • Lightning:
    You gain resistance to Lightning damage and gain a Breath Weapon. You exhale a bolt of lightning, dealing 1d6 lightning damage in a 15-foot line. Creatures within the line must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 12) or be zapped for full damage. Those who succeed take half damage.

    • Breath Weapon Scaling: Your breath weapon damage increases by 1d6 lightning damage every 5 levels, starting at level 5 (2d6 at level 5, 3d6 at level 10, etc.).

  • Acid:
    You gain resistance to Acid damage and gain a Breath Weapon. You spit a ball of acid at a target within 30 feet, creating a 5-foot square area that deals 1d6 acid damage to all creatures within it. Creatures must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 12) to avoid the damage

    • Breath Weapon Scaling: Your breath weapon damage increases by 1d6 acid damage every 5 levels, starting at level 5 (2d6 at level 5, 3d6 at level 10, etc.).


Breath Weapon Use:

  • You can use your Breath Weapon twice per long rest.

  •  At level 10 your Breath Weapon becomes a bonus action.

  •  At level 15 your Breath Weapon recharges on short rest.

Robust Scales

Your small yet sturdy frame is protected by tough, elemental-infused scales. Your unarmored armor class is 13 + your constitution modifier.

Flight

You gain flight at level 8 at a speed of 60ft.

Innate Magic

Gain access to 1 cantrip and 1 level 1 spell of your choice. The spell can be used 2 times per Long rest.

Draconic Strength

You can carry 2x your normal carrying weight (15 x STR x2)
