Homebrew Celestial Apprentice Species Details
Heritage of the Celestial Apprentice
This race represents a rebirth of an angelic demi-god heritage, paying homage to the character’s past life as a divine “Apprentice.” In D&D lore, mortal servants of the gods could ascend into higher celestial forms – Guardians promoted into celestial apprentices in a process called ascendance, eventually becoming “demi” and then full angels. Your character once walked this path, nearly becoming an angelic demigod, and traces of that former glory now shape her very being. Unlike a typical aasimar or other Celestial-touched mortals, a Celestial Apprentice’s traits explicitly reflect healing, creativity, and recovery, the core virtues of her past heavenly station.
Core Themes – Healing, Creativity, Recovery: A Celestial Apprentice is a natural healer and inspirer. She embodies Healing by channeling divine energy to mend others’ wounds, Creativity through an innate ability to shape or enhance magic in unique ways, and Recovery by helping herself and allies bounce back from adversity. These themes might manifest in personality and appearance as well: she could be compassionate and artistic, always seeking to create hope and restore what is broken. Her angelic lineage drives her to protect and heal, using creative magic to overcome challenges rather than brute force.
Physical Appearance & Divine Signs
Visibly, a Celestial Apprentice retains angelic features reminiscent of her former ascended self. Most notably, she bears angelic wings on her back – not merely spectral or temporary, but real feathered wings. The feathers are jet-black yet shimmer with an iridescent rainbow sheen, much like a raven’s plumage catching the light. (In fact, multicolored wings have historically been a symbol of angels in some art, reinforcing her celestial nature.) At a glance the wings appear dark, but subtle highlights of indigo, violet, copper, and gold gleam along the black feathers in sunlight. This unique coloration pays homage to her past: once she was an “Apprentice” of a celestial power associated with creativity and rebirth, symbolized by the raven-like multicolored feathers.
She may also exhibit other minor divine traits. For example, her fingertips darken to black with a slight multi-hued iridescence – as if stained by raven feathers – whenever she channels her power. Her eyes might glow softly when she heals, and a faint halo or aura could appear when her emotions run high. These features mark her as more than mortal. Still, she is humanoid in build (Medium size, typically), able to pass as a tall human or elf when her wings are concealed or folded. Many Celestial Apprentices wear cloaks or custom clothing to accommodate their wings when needed.
Racial Traits and Abilities
As a celestial demi-god lineage, the Celestial Apprentice gains several innate abilities reflecting her angelic past. This race is designed as a caster/hybrid – equally comfortable invoking magic or fighting/supporting alongside allies – but balanced so as not to overshadow other races. Below are the key racial traits:
Ability Scores: The celestial heritage tends to bolster mind and soul. You might increase Charisma by +2, reflecting divine presence, and Wisdom or Intelligence by +1 (Wisdom for a healing-focused nature, or Intelligence for a more creative/arcane bent). This makes the race well-suited for caster or hybrid healer builds. (Exact ability score bonuses can be adjusted to your system’s rules, especially if using point-buy customization.)
Creature Type: You are treated as a Humanoid with a touch of the Celestial. For game mechanics, you are a humanoid (but might register as celestial to spells or effects at the DM’s discretion). You can be of any alignment, though your healing and creative inclinations push you toward good or neutral tendencies.
Age and Lifespan: Having once been near-immortal in your angelic form, you now age slowly. Celestial Apprentices reach maturity at a similar age to humans, but can live much longer (perhaps ~160 years or more, akin to an aasimar, or even several centuries) due to the divine spark in their souls. They do not physically age as quickly, and maintain vitality far beyond human norms.

Divine Creativity
Once per long rest, when you cast a spell of 5th level or lower, you may apply one of the following metamagic-like effects without any sorcery point cost: (a) Twin Spell: if the spell targets only one creature, you can have it simultaneously affect a second target within range. (For example, you could cast a single-target healing or buff spell on two allies at once, or hit two enemies with a single-target attack spell. The same spell slot is used for both.) (b) Extended Spell: if the spell has a duration of at least 1 minute, you can double its duration (to a maximum of 24 hours). This could extend protective spells, illusions, etc., showcasing your creative manipulation of magic. In all cases, the spell’s other parameters remain the same – you are simply bending the magic creatively.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.
Healing Spring
As an action, you can touch an injured creature (not yourself, only others) and restore hit points by drawing from this healing pool. The pool’s total points equal 5 × your proficiency bonus, and it fully replenishes after a long rest. You may divide this healing among multiple uses or pour it all into one use, up to the remaining amount. This functions much like a mini Lay on Hands ability, allowing you to revive or stabilize allies with a touch. However, unlike a paladin’s lay on hands, this racial healing is limited to helping others – a reflection of your selfless angelic nature (you cannot spend it on yourself). For example, at 1st level (proficiency +2) you have 10 points total to heal with; you might heal one ally for 6 and another for 4, then the pool is expended until you rest. This power grows as you do (e.g. 15 points at PB 3, 20 at PB 4, etc.).
