Homebrew Yarnling Species Details

Yarnlings are living humanoid dolls made entirely of colored yarn. Some are neatly crocheted, others are frayed messes barely held together by buttons and willpower. They might have button eyes, stitched smiles, patchwork limbs, or little bows tied where ears should be. Their expressions can be sewn in... or shift with the tension in their threads.

Nobody makes a Yarnling on purpose. They're accidents—sometimes literal. When raw emotion (like grief, joy, or spite) mixes with leftover magic and a doll made of yarn, boom—Yarnling. They're semi-immortal, too light to care about physics, and half-aware of their artificial nature. They don't die, they unravel. And then someone inevitably rethreads them back together again.

Yarnling Traits

Sweet and Charming, but very exYARNinary when sneaking around!

Ability Score Increase

Due to being so friggin cute, this species has a +1 in charisma! Don't let those cute faces fool you though, they can be very sneaky when they need to, having a +2 in Dexterity.

Language

Common, one other of your choice, and Threadspeech—a twitchy, flickering body-language "language" used by animated constructs and haunted toys.

Size

Being a doll and all, these small creatures tend to be between the height of 2 foot and 3.

Loose Threads

As a reaction when you're hit with a melee attack, you can cause part of your yarn body to unravel and reform, reducing the damage by 1d6 + your Charisma modifier. You then teleport 10 feet in any direction as your threads zip back together elsewhere."Long Rest".

Tangled Trouble

You can use your yarn body to restrain creatures. As an action, you can attempt to grapple a target with flying yarn (reach 10 ft). If you succeed, they're restrained instead of grappled. You must maintain concentration (like a spell) to keep them restrained, and you can do this once per long rest.

Yarn Innards

You can store up to 3 small or tiny items inside yourself. It takes a bonus action to pull them out—usually through a dramatic tug of thread.

Stitchshift

You can mildly alter your appearance at will: change your yarn color, add/remove bows, shift your button eyes, twist your form into a scarf, etc. This has no combat effect but can confuse, amuse, or horrify.

Stuffed Resilience

You have resistance to bludgeoning damage from non-magical weapons. You’re basically a pillow with anxiety.
