Homebrew Aas'darakai (Shadar-Kai + Aasimar) Species Details

The Aas'darakai (also known as Aasdarai, or simply Aas'kai) are beings shaped by two opposing forces: the divine spark of the Upper Planes and the cold shadow of the Shadowfell. Whether born from an Aasimar infused with celestial essence or descended from a Shadar-Kai elf in service to the Raven Queen, they walk a path suspended between radiant purpose and deathly fate.

Their appearance reflects this inner duality: skin in shades of pale or ashen gray, often threaded with shimmering hues, eyes glowing with either a soft inner light or a ghostly gleam, and an aura that feels both calming and unsettling.

Aas'darakai are long-lived, often reaching over 750 years of age, and those who serve the Raven Queen do so in more than one lifetime. When a devoted soul perishes, the Queen does not let it fade - instead, she draws it into the Fortress of Memories, a mazelike castle deep within the bleakness of her twilight realm. There, it is restored into a new form, reborn with purpose, and sent forth once more into the world. These emissaries retain the memories of their past lives, and through each incarnation, their connection to fate, shadow, and divine will only deepens.

Some Aas'darakai serve the Raven Queen directly, acting as her agents across the planes. Others drift from her influence, seeking to understand - or reconcile - the discord within their soul. Whether in service or rebellion, the Aas'darakai exist as living paradoxes: immortal echoes bound by duty, yet driven by freedom.

Aas'darakai Traits

Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 4–7 feet tall) or Small (about 2–4 feet tall), chosen when you select this species
Speed: 30 feet

For information on languages, classes, and other character creation rules, see the Player’s Handbook.

As an Aas'darakai, you have these special traits.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray (Darkvision).

Celestial and Necrotic Resistance

You have resistance to celestial and necrotic damage.

Blessing of the Raven Queen

As a bonus action, you can magically teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Starting at 3rd level, you also gain resistance to all damage when you teleport using this trait. The resistance lasts until the start of your next turn. During that time, you appear ghostly and translucent.

Fey Ancestry

You have advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the Charmed condition on yourself.

Keen Senses

You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

Trance

You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness.

Whenever you finish this trance, you can gain two proficiencies that you don’t have, each one with a weapon or a tool of your choice selected from the Player’s Handbook. You mystically acquire these proficiencies by drawing them from shared elven memory, and you retain them until you finish your next long rest.

Echo of Vitality

As a Magic action, you extend your hand - glowing faintly with the mingled essence of shadow and light - and touch a creature within reach. Roll a number of d4s equal to your Proficiency Bonus. The creature regains Hit Points equal to the total rolled, as threads of life are momentarily rewoven.

Twilight Spark

You know the Light cantrip. When you cast it, the illumination emerges from a softly glowing mote of dusk, hovering like a fading star. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Umbral Revelation

Starting at 3rd level, you can unleash the mixed essence of the Upper Planes and the Shadowfell within you. As a Bonus Action, you transform for 1 minute or until you end the transformation (no action required). You can use this feature once per Long Rest.

Each time you transform, choose one of the following manifestations. While transformed, once per turn, when you deal damage with a spell or weapon attack, you deal extra Radiant or Necrotic damage (your choice) equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

Here are the transformation options:

Wings of Dusk. Ethereal wings of feathers that shift between black and silver sprout from your back temporarily. Until the transformation ends, you have a Fly Speed equal to your Speed. When you end your turn in the air, shadowy wind lashes enemies below. One creature within 10 feet must succeed a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 + your Charisma modifier and Proficiency Bonus) or take damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus (Radiant or Necrotic, your choice) and is Prone.

Veil of Echoes. Your form flickers between moments, a phantom of light and shadow, and a searing light radiates from your eyes and mouth. For the duration, you shed Bright Light in a 10-foot radius and Dim Light for an additional 10 feet, and at the end of each of your turns, each creature within 10 feet of you takes Radiant damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

Death's Reflection. Your eyes briefly become pools of darkness, and flightless wings sprout from your back temporarily. Creatures other than your allies within 10 feet of you must succeed on a Charisma saving throw (DC 8 + your Charisma modifier and Proficiency Bonus) or have the Frightened condition and Disadvantage on saving throws against being Charmed or Frightened again, until the end of your next turn.
