Homebrew Bloodfin Species Details

Originating from harsh, stormy, uncharted waters, the sharklike bloodfins seek relative safety above the surface - but never go too far from their ocean home, becoming sailors, dockworkers, or deep-sea divers.

Bloodfins have the heads and serrated teeth of sharks, along with their gills, fins, and attraction to blood. Once the natural predators of merfolk, those who reside on the surface have given up eating people (for the most part) in exchange for being allowed to live among them, though they must still fight to escape the stigma that comes from their carnivorous nature.

Bloodfin Traits

Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 6–8 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet, swimming 30 feet

As a Bloodfin, you have these special traits.

Fast Swimmer

Your swimming speed is 30 feet.

Amphibious

You can breathe both air and water. As a marine species, fresh water may be slightly harder to breathe than salt water, but you can function easily in both.

Deadly Bite

Your serrated teeth can be used as a natural weapon. You may use your Bite as part of your Attack action on your turn. It deals 1d4 + your Strength modifier piercing damage, and if the attack hits, you may regain 1d6-2 hit points (minimum of 0).

Feeding Frenzy

You may channel your sharklike instincts to whip yourself into a frenzy when an enemy bleeds or tries to flee. When a Beast or Humanoid you can see is dealt bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, or when a creature that you can see leaves your reach using its action, its Bonus Action, its Reaction, or one of its speeds, you may use your Reaction to move up to half your movement speed towards it and make a Bite attack against it if able. You can do this a number of times per Long Rest equal to your proficiency modifier.
